Dropping a 4.6 into a fox "what engine would you go with for the money"?

1. 99+ GT 4.6
2. mach 1 4.6
3. one of the cobra engines "not the 03-04" yet
4. explorer 4.6

The reason for asking is I know nothing about these engines. I know a lot of you guys have messed with them and have them. I was wanting to know cause I do know they all have different heads and perform a lot different than each other!!

and what five or six speed will work behind one these?

Thanks guys and gals a lot...... all the info will help out a lot.......

Having an 06 GT and not driving any of the other cars you mentioned, I would go with a 05-07 GT motor. You can pick them up for about $4000 on ebay sometimes with a trans. I am hopefully picking up a 67 Fastback that I am contemplating putting either a 400 bigblock or a 05-07 Gt in.

are those the same motor mounts as the old 4.6's? I know they make a k-member for the 4.6 swap into the fox. so it would work to then... mmmm I forgot about the 05-07 GTs

Honestly, a 5 liter can probably be built for less money and will make more power than a stock modular.....there's just so many parts out on the market.

If you're hell-bent on a N/A modular, I'd go with a 03-04 Mach I as they use the same heads as the Cobra and are the best 4.6 4V heads available for the money.

(I have owned a 98 GT 2V non-PI 4.6L, 00 GT 2V 4.6L, 01 Cobra 4V 4.6L, and 03 Cobra blown 4V 4.6L.)

Also, keep in mind that a 3V will probably cost you more than any of the others due to the amount of em available.....then the 03-04 4V, 99-01 4V, 99-04 2V, pre-99 2V....in that order. ;)

Sorry I guess I should have said N/A for now and moving to a super charger later or spray!! I was really worried about the heads and internals of them.. what one could perform the best n/a and still handle a S.C. or spray later down the road.... I was thinking the mach I would be the best or the 99 cobra engine would be.... but I have no idea so that's why I am asking ppl that do know and can help LOL THANKS

I would do a Mach 1 motor that has a manual behind it. They have a nice 8 bolt crank in them. Unless you get a dirt cheap GT motor then definetly do the Mach. Many stock Machs are in the high 12's. So putting that motor in yours plus a couple of mods and you should be a happy camper.

As a note....IN STOCK FORM all of the above mentioned engines come from the factory with hyperCRAP pistons.

Only the 03/04 Cobra and 07+ GT500's have forged bottom ends.

So what kind of HP are we talking that a mach I can handle? That's before I would have to put different pistons in it, and what about rods in the mach I engine? If the 03-04 cobra engine was a choice how much more would be involved with putting one in a fox? "with being a S.C. engine from factory"

In my opinion, I would only use a power adder on a stock bottom end if I was planning on rebuilding the engine (or building one already). It's not a matter of if it'll let go, it's when.

Tune definitely matters a lot, but if I was gonna do it, I'd do it right. (that's why I didn't run F/I on my previous N/A cars......I bought the 03 that was built for boost. :D

To answer your question, I'd keep it around 400 rwhp on any of the setups......450+ is gonna cause that "rebuild" to happen a lot sooner.

JMO.
