On your mustang? A brand new flywheel and a brand new starter, and my car STILL doesnt sound right when it turns over. it sounds really loud, not quite like a grinding, but more of a binding sound. its hard to explain. someone suggested shimming it so i tried shimming it with 2 small washers one on each bolt, and it didnt help any. so if anyone has shimmed one please chime in and let me know how you went about it, and if it helped or not. Im stressed out and running out of ideas. I also tried using another bell housing and it did not help.

Try swapping the starter out for another one to see if the issue is with the starter. If it isnt, maybe the flywheel is bad, even tho both are new.

You got the dustshield between the engine and bellhousing?

You're not running a mini starter are you?

Just a shot in the dark but check your timing. I had a Dodge when I was a late teens to early 20s and if I advanced the timing too far, the starter sounded like it couldn't turn the motor over. Kind of like it was binding. Just a thought.

I had 3 Ford starter shims on my car at one point. I think I'm down to 2 now, but I can't really remember. I think you need shims when the engine starts to run, but it keeps dragging the starter after you let the key go. At least that's what I used them for.

Same here, ever since I put the billet flywheel in I have had to shim the starter or it will not want to disengage after its started. Ruined two starters learning this fact.
