Turns out the 351W has more cubic inches and stuff, so I went ahead and bought one.
As this is my first Ford and I am a bit of an idiot, I have a couple questions...

-Flywheel: The 351 has a flexplate. Will the flywheel/clutch on my 289 bolt up with no problems?

-Harmonic balancer: I need my V-belt...should I stick with the 289 piece or leave the 351 ballancer on?

-Timing chain: I know some years the cam was retarded a bit... I have a new double roller chain for an early 289/302. should this be OK with a roller cammed 351?

-Water pump: the 289 water pump outlet is on the passenger side. Will this water pump bolt right up to the 351?

-Distributor: I have the stock distributor from the 289 with an Igniter electronic ignition, and the EFI distributor on the 351. What distributor do I need? An early 351W distributor with a later gear?
I know I will have to drill and tap the block for the mechanical clutch linkage, and swap oil pans and pickup tubes...

What year is the 351? small block fords have two different ballance offsets depending on the years and motors. Some are 28oz and some are 50oz. You can't mix and match.

I think the timing chain is different due to the taller deck height on the 351. The dist will have the same problem.

351 and 289 I think are all 28 ounce imballance. So either flywheel ballancer should be correct. All the timing covers, Timing chains/gears, waterpumps are interchangable. The 351 does have a different firing order than the 289. Distributor is different because of the deck height. What kinda of ignition do you have?

I think 50 ounce is only 5.0HO 1985 and Up.

what do you want for the 289? and pardon my ignorance but isn't a 351 considered a big block (or it was back in my day)?

351w is still a small block ford. No 351 came with a 50oz imbalance, it was only 0 and 28 like Tim said.

I think in your advanced age, you must be thinking of the FE series 352.

Sorry Rally- I am keeping the 289 on the stand, as it is the origional engine and would up the resale if I decide to sell the car. I was just afraid of breaking it, so I thought is better to save the 289 and do a 351.

The firing order will probably change, as I am planning on a cam change.

I am going to run the stock EFI distributor if my buddies have their way- everybody seems to think that an injected 351 on the juice in a '67 would be cool. I tend to agree.

They did make some 50oz 351's not many but they did make them I think they are 94+ 351's

Really? Those are the roller 351w's, and I still thought they had the 28oz imbalance.

Injected is wayyyy cool... how about a s-trim or some other blower???
I've always been a fan of late model drive tains in early cars. A friend has a 69 camaro w/a grand national motor it's pretty cool.

If it was white it was him. He took it to pumpkin run and had alot of the original car kinda guys all upset . I guess if he would have put it in a 67-68 they wouldn't care as much. Everyone wants a 69 so you know how that goes, I told him if u really want to stir them up put a ford motor in it.
That will go over like a terd in a punch bowl.
