Hi
I need some help. I am not a hard core racer, but need to carve a couple thent's off my 60ft. 1.96. I now run bfg dr's, will changing tires alone do it or not. Now I use 325x50x15 bfg's old design.

Pops I talked to a guy at MT and he told me that the MT dr's are basically for an automatic car. If I'm not mistaken you have a 5speed. I have done a lot of investigating on these tires. Some people said they worked killer on their 5speed cars. Some have told me they just blew right threw first and second gears.

I had some et streets on a 5 speed car and was pulling 1.6 60ft's with a 4:10 Gear

I was going to get the MT dr's before I did all the investigating. Once my car is done I will get the MT ET streets...

I heard the same thing about the MT on stick cars...hard to get them to work . I say throw some slicks on it or et streets, quick time pro's. I used 8" slicks and went 1.5 60's for a while with stock axles and posi but your conv is heavy so they may not last long...it's a gamble either way.

I have gone consistant low 1.7's on 275-40-17" BFG DR's back in my 01 Cobra. (4.30's, Eibach Pro-Kit springs, 03 Cobra pumpkin brace)

With my 03 (MM full-length subframes, Billetflow IRS brace, Eibach Pro-Kit springs, stock 3.55 gears) I've gone mid/high 1.7's on 275-40-17 MT DR's launching anywhere from 3-4k depending on (lack there of) track prep. I think I'm fighting some clutch issues though.

I've never run either car with real track prep. When I've been able to run with the slick cars and launch in the rubber, I'll bog at 4k.

In all, I don't have a problem with either tire.....I think that trackprep is the key. I start at 15 psi (usually blowing the tires off through 3 gears) and work myself down to 11-13 psi. I don't sidestep the clutch, but I don't slip it on the launch either.....it's a quick pull of the foot while I'm simultaneously putting the skinny pedal to the floor. :D

Then again, I'm the guy making 490/477 that can barely run 11's.......so I wouldn't listen to me either.

You've got the right tires for the 60' you're wanted. Regardless of the rumors, I think the M/T DRs will give you better bite. Still though, something is off. Tire pressure, suspension too tight, too low of a gear (numerically). There's definitely something up.

How about some info? What rear gear? How are you doing your burnout? How are you launching? Are the tires spinning? Etc.

I got a 3.73 gear with extra clutches, big burnout seems to work best, About a 2.5 to 3 grand launch, spinning the tires then biting, spinning in second then biting, then I am ok. Have bogged a couple times off the line?? This year I put in some adj. tokich struts (street not drag), hoping to raise the front some. Havent been to the track yet. Maybe friday nite. :)

I have run as fast as 1.44 on the 275/60 MT drag radials with an automatic. I think they would be a step up from the BFGs, even on a stick car. I am with Sharad though, something else seems wrong. A 325 is a big tire to be 60 footing that bad. How old are the BFGs?

Drop the air pressure......start about 15 psi and go from there.

I was launching my 01 Cobra at 6k with those tiny sidewall BFG's at 10-11 psi. Stock halfshafts too! :bigthumb

They are old bought them 3 or 4 years ago and they were used then..

3.73 gear with a 28" tall tire (325/50-15) could be killing a little bit of time off of the sixty foot. With that tall of a tire, a 4.10 or even a 4.30 wouldn't be unreasonable. (taking your mods into consideration... centrifugals like revs) The bad thing is, then when you put your normal street tires on, you're in fifth at 45mph.

Still though, seems like it should bite harder?

I think a shorter sticky tire would be good. 26" ET Streets or even 255/60-15 ET Street Radials?

With the stick he has enough power and starting line ratio. I had enough trouble with the BFG's on the Factory Stock car. It went high 1.6-1.70 with 300hp at the wheels. I am impressed with the Mickey Radials I have gone mid 1.4's on the 275-60 and 325-50's on my capri with the Glide. I could not leave off the transbrake on the Nitrous with them. The stiff wall slicks I have now did not go faster in the 60ft but it was much more consistant. If I was running on the street I would run the Mickey Radials and not worry about putting air in the tires everyday and having some tread if it rains.

im right with you on the 60 ft times ... im pulling 1.7x's - 1.9x's barely running 11's in a mid to low 11 second car ... 27x10.5x15 et streets / 4.10's ...

i would run MT et streets with your horsepower and having a 5 speed ... you will blow the MT et street "radials" up ... no give ~ no crinkle! ... too stiff of a side wall for a stick car - yes you could run them, but will you get the max out of your car?

but what do i know, i cant 60ft myself this year

Ricky, youre problem is in the drivers seat. Have Ian drive it.

im launching at 5500-6000, cant get it any higher ... any lower and you might as well not race (if you cant get aggressive, then why run?) its the rear springs, they are lowering springs ~ not drag racing springs (i have wheel hop) ... last year i pulled 1.5x's all year long, its a car issue with the new wheel setup ... it will be fixed {immediately} ~ then the horsepower will be added ...

i refuse to jack my car up 2 feet (4x4 look) just to launch, i will get the lowered aggressive look and the performance at the track ...... even if it takes coilovers on all four corners ..........

remember its a street car, no roll cage!!!!

i've been racing since i was 19, i think i know what im doing!

lights at UMTR .013 - .080 - .065 5/12/07 ..... i think im fine .........

I liked my 275/40/17 MT ET Street Radials. I cut mid 1.7 60's with them pretty consistantly. I was dumping the clutch at 6k on launch with a 4.30 gear and the 2.66 1st gear of my T56. I bought a set of 15" wheels and 275/60/15 Mickey ET Street Radials and have only had one trip down to Tri-State and couldn't hook to save my life. I think that the results I was seeing with the 17" tires show that the Drag radials can work with a stick car. I also borrowed a buddies ET streets and pulled the exact same 60' times even after playing with the launch rpm and tire pressure.

There's nothing wrong with the tires, those things are monsters. Your shocks and springs are probably whats killing your 60' times. Your car also makes good power, I'd drop the pressure down to around 13 or so and try and bog the car slightly off the line and then mat the gas, with your power level, it will recover quickly and should hook. I also turn the mirror so that I can watch the smoke coming off the tire before I leave the burnout box. I had best results on BFG's with just starting to see the smoke wisp off the tire and pulling up to the line. Do not do another dry hop to check them.

Hi
The car has Elbrach lowering springs, Tokich adjustable street shocks on the front, HMP mega bite upper and lower control arms, torque boxes rewelded, that is all i remember..

Are the Eibachs Sportlines or Pro? If Sportlines - I would start with ditching those. When I took those of mine I noticed a big difference!

Yep, the springs are killing your 60' times. All the lowering springs have a higher spring rate and they just dont work well for drag racing. Lots of suspension guys will tell you to use stock GT springs in the rear, they're a good compromise.

Just curious as to why you are only launching at 3,000?

Why not just put some ET streets on rev it up to 5500-6000 and let it rip...

Because thats not going to fix the problem. If thats all there was to it, the drag radial classes could save a bunch of money. Someone call Big Daddy and get his opinion. I'll bet my left nut he doesn't say run eibach lowering springs!:D

I bet he doesnt say much of anything. I would say the lowering springs are hurting you on the drag strip. How much of a 1/4 mile car do you want to make this Steve?

No shit..I know there is more to just slapping some tires on and going at it. You can't go swapping a bunch of shit all at once.If you do that then you don't know what is going to work and what will not work. You have to try out one thing at a time.

I don't really need much more than I have Yeah I know you get a little then you want more.. :D I have been saying if I was in the 11's consistently I would be happy :D
Then it would be something else I am sure.

Good to catch up - even if it was for just a few minutes. I went back to my stock springs. The front's of course are coilovers now - but the rears are still stockers. :bigthumb
