A friend of mine told me he would trade me straight up for my 302 EFI motor I have sitting in my garage for his 351W carb setup. His motor is a crate motor from columbus engines and has approx. 15K miles on it and it runs excellent. My motor has 98K and runs just fine as well. I currently have a carb setup in my car now so parting with the EFI doesn't bother me. So the question is how much more power do I gain out of the 351 over a 302 and is it worth it? I wanted to see what the pro's and con's would be since I dont have any knowledge of the 351W. Also I need to find out if it is a roller motor as well. The only thing i would do would be add a cam, roller rockers, a bigger intake, and a set of headers. Just looking for some insight.

Thanks,
Andy

I had a mild 351 (.040 over) and on garage sale/internet parts was able to mustar a 11.33 off the trailer!!! I think you have alot of options with a 351 and since you are already Carbed you dont have to worrie about the added expence of the intake and such to go EFI The 351 (imo) also will withstand mord power ie: the crank journals being larger...However look at Chad393 and IBstrokin. They are a stroked 302 vs a stroked 351 and are running neck and neck (with power adder combos) If you are starting from GO!!! I would build the 351 not much more cost, for alot of available cubis inches!!!!(IMO)
Good Luck:bigthumb

That pretty much sums it up if you ask me. If money is no object, then by all means build a stroked 302 race engine with a Man-O-War block and stroke it to their advertised 370ci potential and knock your socks off....BUT if you work for a living, and you're limited to stock blocks, why not start off with a bigger stronger block that'll hold more cubes? Most stroker kits cost about the same between a 302 and 351. Also once you cover the initial expense on swap parts, you won't spend any more money on the 351 than you will a 302.

Thanks guys for the input. So will most the parts interchange between the two motors, like the Cam, heads and timing chain parts. Also are all 351W motors roller type?

Yes and No some parts will interchange like heads, cam, front cover ect....
If you can get a early 70's block they are stronger but you will run a tie bar lifter or find a newer block and it will be a roller block but not as strong if you go solid roller you can pick up cam/tie bar lifters from Doug Herbert for around 400 bucks not bad. You will spend more then 300 on the tie bar hyd. lifters alone

a few differences i know: oil pan, distributor, headers and intake ... everything else might be the same between the 2 blocks ...

good luck on it :bigthumb

Does anyone know the HP rating on a stock 351w, friend just told me its a re-manufactured block for a 1985 F350. I know the 302 EFI has 225 at the flywheel.

The heads are interchangeable, but 351w heads have 1/2" bolt holes compared to 7/16" bolt holes on 302 heads. 69-74 blocks are the strongest, and I believe 95 was the first year for the 351w roller block. If your buddies block isn't a roller block, you will have to make some modifications to get a hydraulic cam to work.

Also newer 302's use a 50oz imbalance, while most stock 351's use 28oz.

on a safe tune I would say 600hp Ford rates their 351 cranks at 600hp but it's all in the tune 300hp will destroy it if the tune is all out of wack:bigthumb

If it's a reman block for a truck, it's probably a cast piston/low compression, if I had to guess. You can convert the older blocks to roller by drilling/tapping 2 holes in the lifter valley(to hold the lifter spider). I think you will have to use a small base circle cam if you go hyd. roller. You will need a different distributor, hood clearance could be an issue, unless you already have a cowl hood.

Like doug(91lxnos) said, low 11's on stock crank and rods with a decent piston all motor. Windsors are definetely easier to make more power, but I'm not sure this one is the one for you, it really all depends on the details. Find out what comp. ratio you will have w/your heads, and what type pistons they are.

If you need a cam, I have a 351W hydraulic roller retrofit cam sitting in the garage I'll sell. It lets you use stock 5.0 style lifters, so you don't have to drop 400 bucks on the tie-bar lifters. It's got a few wear marks on one or two of the lobes, but it worked perfectly when I pulled it out of my motor.

Here ya go guys....i can't back up 100% of this list but it seems to be good info for the swap. It might be common knowledge to some but it's great for anyone who has questions.

Thats killer info....:bigthumb

Yeah it doesn't sound like this may be the block for me, I prefer that everything be hydraulic and ready to go. On the other hand I could leave everything as a solid lift and buy a flat tappet cam..
