Sweet stang... and a little carnage as well that comes with the territory!

After locating another production block and having it hot tanked/magnafluxed and pressure tested, it turned out to be scrap. Ugh.

So I got ANOTHER production block and dropped it off. In 2 months, it's been hot tanked and nothing else. My crank was looked at (Eagle forged unit) and turned out to have some thrust bearing wear. New crank required.

So why buy a new crank for an old block? Yep, you guessed it. Dart block was ordered and shipped out this morning.

The damaged heads were sent out for repair and porting to Mike Curcio Race Products. I also sent the intake and nitrous plate to get some running equalization going on. Some Manley Nexxtek triple springs, titanium locks and retainers and 3000 dollars later:

Heads are now 230cc on the intake and the chambers have been modified so there are no hot spots around the spark plug. I don't know what caused the detonation last time, but I'm doing everything I can to avoid it this time around.

Jay Allen @ Camshaft Innovations has done the cam, and it should be here early next week. Converter is going to come from Lenny @ Ultimate. Waiting for Jesel to finish redesigning their shaft mount 1.7s for the R heads and I'll get those ordered up. I've ordered an HVH nitrous plate to use instead of the perimeter spraybarless NX unit. I'm also going to order up a sheetmetal wing to add to the car.

Hopefully I'll be racing in August/September.

The last gift my good friend gave me before he passed:

I'll update this thread as things go on.

During this time, I also bought a new truck to tow the enclosed trailer with:

http://www.mts.net/~9secgt/Pictures/F250/IMG_1752.jpg

So hopefully I get a motor put together soon. The machine shop is waiting on me now, so that's not good. Cubic inch will remain around 408. No real additions other than some wiring and painting I didn't do last time around. I might finish up the back half of the car with carpet or something too.

The goal for the project is to run in the 150+ mph range. Hopefully sub 9.20s. I'm really looking for an 8.99 around 155mph.

That car has gone a long way from a small nitrous hit on a stock motor. If you have not ordered that HVH Plate I know Brian at BES had one in stock for sale. I would think 8's on the right track decent weather should not be a problem. What CID is the new Mill?

Thanks guys! Timido, I'll see if I can get ahold of Brian.

The new mill will be in the 408 - 418 range depending what crank we need to use my existing rods/pistons.

To be honest, i'd be thrilled with a nice moderate wheels up 9.20 pass at 150.

I feel your pain on the shitty head gaskets bro.

looks killer.

I wish someone would have told me before I used those shitty things. My engine builder wanted me to go with loc wires, but I'd rather blow a gasket than a piston. I didn't know they could take out a block though.

Timido, oddly enough I HAD those gaskets and was advised against it. I switched to these and you see where they got me. It'll be some sort of MLS or Cometic this time around.

Gotta love replacing headgaskets Ian. Yours looks still usable compared to mine.

I never imagined in a million years I'd put a cam this big in a street car, but I trust Jay. The old cam was 268/276 @ .050 and 640/650 lift. This cam is much bigger everywhere, safe for intake duration.

Vacuum @ idle (which is 1200! LOL) says 3.2lbs.

Well, the Dart has arrived. I'm picking it up from North Dakota on Friday. I'm also dropping my headers off to get ceramic coated on Friday.

Slow and steady....

I made it back from a successful border run and the block goes to the machine shop today. I'm not sure how long it'll take, but I'd really like to make a pass this year.

Blk88GT
07-18-2007, 10:43 PM
Everything but the rockers, valve covers and timing cover are at the machine shop. I still need a crank, balancer and flexplate. It sounds like they're starting on it tomorrow. The headers are out for ceramic coating as well.

Good luck! You're chipping away at it, you'll get it done before you know it. Can't wait to see it in action.

Got the call yesterday, headers are done already. I can't believe it was a 2 day turnaround. Too bad the motor can't be that quick!

Me neither. The new combo is going to be sick.

I'm going to an internal balance 418ci rotating assembly this time. Maybe a little more compression (11.2:1) and some Cometic gaskets.

The goal is to actually REQUIRE a chute :)

The machine shop just called (@8:45!). They checked out the block and everything looks good, just minor cleanup like bottom tapping holes, truing the deck, bore/hone and line hone.

One of the pistons showed some wear from detonation, so we're going to swap it out since I have 2 extras. I'm glad I got talked into ordering spares last time :)

The crank (Eagle 4.10 stroke) gets ordered tomorrow, and I'm going to drop off the pistons with some cash to keep things moving :)

I'm still waiting for Jesel to get their shit together and finish their new rocker design for the R heads. Doesn't look promising so far, I've been waiting for over a month already.

I'm holding off on the convertor, because I'm not sure what to order. I want to deal with Lenny @ Ultimate, but a take apart convertor interests me ver much since I can do my own maintenance on it.

Pistons are dropped off, we decided to go with Cometics for head gaskets and I gave him more money. LOL

I talked to Brian at BES about that NX super sucker plate it is allready sold. Sounded like a good deal. At that level why not run a fogger?

Blk88GT
08-02-2007, 10:15 AM
I wanted the simplicity of the plate. I ordered the new plate from a friend of mine who has an 'in' with NX. I'll give that a go before I go through the trouble of switching to a fogger.

The next combo doesn't involve nitrous at all, so there's no point putting a ton more money into it :)

Next Combo? You are thinking like I am. My 408 is so much fun N/A Bigger is better right? So why not even bigger

I'm thinking 427, 91.5 single turbo, air/air intercooler, water/meth, electronically controlled shifter and EFI for next time around.

I'd like to be able to run 165mph with my eyes shut, on a small tire, on pump fuel with my left arm taped behind my back. I'd like to be able to dump some race gas in and go 175 when the track officials aren't looking too :)

I don't see why it's not possible.
