Since there are so many people who havn't seen this car at all, I'll just start from the begininning. It started like this. Its a 1980 Pinto with 25k original miles. We wanted to start with a virgin. Nothing like taking a virgin and really reaming on her. The goal of the car is to basically make a street legal drag car.

Ford 9" rear end. Its a Currie unit. Nodular iron 3rd member. 1/4" wall axle tubes. Its got brackets welded on it for a 4 link setup, anti-roll bar, wheelie bars, shock mounts, and locator bar mount.

Engine setup. Its a Ford "2.3" liter. Some might be familiar with Fords tall deck blocks. Thats what we have. Its a 2.7 liter in its current state, o-ringed, scat crank, crower billet rods, weisco pistons, all custom built to our specs. The head is an Essengler ARCA head, with their .620 lift turbo cam. Solid lifters, big valves, etc.

We decided to go with an external wet sump oiling system. The header is an equal length and equal degree of bending withing 0.25" and 15 degrees on every runner. The intake is a unit designed to be 2.5 times the engine displacement.

Man there's not much "Ford" left on that 2.3! That poor little Pinto didn't know what hit it. I'd love to have an engine like that in a Mustang coupe.

07-30-2007, 11:34 AM
Just out of curiosity what is your target hp/weight goal. BTW keep up the good work that is going to be a really cool car when it is done.:bigthumb

Kevin Doe
07-30-2007, 11:41 AM
We originally set for a 2500 lb weighty target, but from the way the cage spiraled out of control, to almost a tube frame back halfed car, we think it might be a bit over that, maybe 2700.

The hp we're expecting to hit is 800 hp to the wheels. The turbo pictured is a T70, which we're using as our "break-in" turbo, then we'll be stepping up to a larger turbo once we get the car mostly dialed in. I think the first year will be mostly a learning curve as far as getting the 4 link dialed in and the car launching straight. Then we can worry about putting more power down.

Wow that is a cool project. I thought Huber performance wheel standing 4 banger stang was cool but this is way over board. From what I read those tall deck blocks are getting hard to find and expensive to buy. I did read that there is the possibility of Indy Cylinder Head casting some blocks to replace them.

**Resisting sudden urge to back-half and Turbo my '77 Mustang II**

So what exactly is a Tall deck 2.3?? and what did they come in??

Kevin Doe
08-01-2007, 05:26 PM
They didn't come in anything. There was a racing league that Ford wanted to race in, but they required a "production" engine. So Ford thought of the bright idea to cast a "production run" of ~200 blocks. There are not many of them left around, expecially untouched like our was. They are based off the 2.3 lima block, but the deck height was increased ~1/2" to allow for a longer stroke, and the webbing was strengthened to handle much increased power. The block is overall 75 lbs heavier than a normal 2.3 block.

Finally, progress has begun again.

The seat has been mounted, the steering shaft has been mounted, the shifter has been moved rearward to fit the seating position, pedals as mounted, the clutch linkage is complete, most of the interior pannels have been made, the firewall is nearly complete, the trans is mounted, the driveshaft safety loop is in.....

Some pics of what we've been working on as of late.

Its collected a bunch of shit over the years.

Kevin Doe

Ford 2300 based engine. Ford limited "production" tall deck block. Stroked to ~2.7 liters. Custom rotating assembly. Esslinger aluminum ARCA head. O-ring'd setup. Solid lifters, big turbo cam.

We ended up going with a external pump wet sump setup. The intake manifold volume is slightly larger than engine displacement. Each runner has a bell-mouth sticking into the plenum. Current turbo is a Super T-70. Exhaust turbo header is an equal length, equal degree of bend setup, out of stainless pipe.

3" turbo to AWIC piping, 3" transition to 4" out of AWIC, into 4" throttle with mechanical linkage.
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l55/Kevin_Doe/Pinto/Pinto11-21-20101.jpg

Intake manifold pic from before it was finished.
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l55/Kevin_Doe/Pinto/pinto8.jpg

No air filter, just a screen up front. Removed passenger side turn signal and replace it with a screen setup. Then ducted it straight to the turbo inlet.
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l55/Kevin_Doe/Pinto/Pinto11-21-20104.jpg

http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l55/Kevin_Doe/Pinto/Pinto11-21-20103.jpg

For the AWIC setup we have a ~5-6 gallon insulated ice water tank. Off the pump we put a two way valve to pump it out to fill it back up with ice. There is a 6" fill hole for the tank for easy ice fill. Inside the tank there is a screen to keep large pieces of ice from getting chomped up in the pump.

Kevin, you've got some serious talent! That is just plain bad azz!I read through the posts and noticed that you think it will weigh in at 2700?The reason I pondered this is my Vega is all steel all glass except the windshied(Which cracked due to an extreme verticle wheel stand without the wheelie bars) and it only weighs 2450 without me.Its a control arm mustang II type setup with rack. With a SBC .It also runs 9.80 has been 60's on good air and a sprag converter(now spragless).I really think your pinto gonna be a low 9.0 or better car.My sbc is only making 588 @ the crank.Good luck with it and deff cant wait to see it on a pass!:bigthumb

That is one original setup. So would it be considered a "Turbohatch"? LOL! When I heard it idling I thought it was a V8 setup. That is truly the baddest 4 banger I have ever heard. You have truly got a talent there that could potentially make you a lotttttt aaaaa money if you were to martket it. I covet your abilities.

Thanks guys! Can't wait go get this thing out and about.

Hey hey, a few hour long tuning sessions in the driveway and we've made a lot of progress.

We had a few issue we've worked through. We had an oil leak (more like a mist explosion). The oil pressure hose on the output of our external oil pump wasn't fully tightened and misted us pretty good. Then we had some issues with the timing belt setup. It wasn't riding where we wanted it to so we had to do some shimming to get it right. Now we're having some charging issues, I suspect the alternator isn't functioning properly. It only charges to ~12.8V, then sometimes it stops charging all together. Probably get a new battery soon, as its really impeding the tuning progress.

Took another video while it was idling. This time you can hear it properly. It sounds absolutely ridiculous for a 4 cylinder. I love it!

We've been wanting to do UMTR, not sure this year is gonna happen though, maybe a few races.
