So I loaned my truck to my buddy while he left his car at my house because he crashed it. This 97 ranger 2.3 has about 220,000 miles on it. Still ran just fine oil is clean antifreeze looks great. He takes it up 471 hill wide open in 5th gear at about 50mph. Dieseling the crap out of it. Had to sound like a pocketful of change. Needless to say by the top of the hill the engine was spent. This guy has blown 5 engines in his s-10 the same exact way. Cracked the head. I didn't think you could crack a 2.3 head until now.
Best of all he calls a buddy that lives near there. goes and hangs out at his house for a few hours and then calls me about 3 hours later. Telling me he'll pick my truck up on a trailor in a few days until then it's perfectly fine sitting on the side of the highway. So then I get to pay $128 tow bill to get my truck home safely. I do have a backup motor which is a 98 2.5 that I was planning on putting in at my own leisure.

Some people just dont care much about anything. If it were me that had a motor expire in a friends truck, Id be pushing it to get it home if I had to.

That's why you don't let "buddies" drive your stuff unless you know that they are the kind of person who will make it good if something happens.

I am the same way. I won't even hammer down in someone's car even if they tell me too. I have respect for other people's cars.

that is shitty...looks like someone needs to learn a thing or two about downshifting...

If I break it, I fix it. My dad taught me that a long time ago.

i learned a long time ago dont do favors for any one even if they are a great friend. you only do favors for your best friends, a wise man once told me if you do a favor for someone it will eventually cost you something no matter how yo look at it. im sorry to see that happened to you i wish you sht best of luck in a resolution

I have to look at it as one of those things you just fix it and carry on, but it sucks. I have the motor readfy to come out already time to pull it and swap in a much better motor anyway.

Sorry to here about your truck! That's why I am pretty picky with who I let take mine... usually those who are familiar with it and will help out if something happens to it.... or they have the spare parts for it.

BTW, where is 471 "hill"?

Sucks about your truck. I learned about loaning people vehicles the hard way too. It's an even harder lesson when bikes are involved. Back in the day I let a 'buddy' ride my just rebuild gt500. Less then 5 minutes later he walked in the door with road rash on his legs and arms. Unfortunately he was in better shape than the bike.

Wait, his car is at your house right?

Seems like a fair trade, even if it is smashed up.

I won't take that pos for scrap he wants to fix it but it isn't leaving here til he ponies up the tow.

Update. Maybe it wasn't the guys fault. It looks like my tank got sugared. Right before the motor blew 2 guys I know who are brothers brought their moms car over wanting me to fix it...for free. Well I was busy and didn't get to it. So 4 days later the mother calls me throwing a fit. I told her to take it somewhere else. Apparently she gave them $350 to pay me to fix it and they pocketed the money. So when it came down to her getting her money back she found out they took it. The engine went the same way again today or thats what it seems to be to me. I don't think it blew a hole in the piston again but it would have if I continued driving. I found crystal like substance inside the fuel fill door and cap....

i'll never understand why some people act the way they do:confused:

but on a sidenote i've seen a sig somewhere that says:

Never loan a car or your girlfriend to a friend, you'll probably get them back with a rod slung in them.

If you have to hammer it down 5th gear 50mph on 471 it was junk from the go. I know a 2.3 is guttless anyway but they are not that bad.

That truck would never have pulled 471 in 5th at 50 even when it was new it required downshifting for that.

Now come on, not everyone is an asshole. Mad Matt Johnson has been borrowing one of my vehicles for a week or so now - 1st the old stang, then the Ranger for the weekend, now the stang again. I have no problem and would let him borrow any of my vehicles anytime. Well, I've have to give serious thought to letting the newer stang out of my site, but I'd probably do it for him.
