Well, I am down here again at the shop. I am meeting my little bro in law to finish up the sub install. Once that is done, I am going to get some stuff done on mine. If anyone is out running around, stop on in.

I worked on my coupe a little today. Got the patch panels tacked in on the driver's side. It is not pretty because our air compresser is down. I need to grind the edges so it can be welded better. If I can get out tonight, I will get the passenger side tacked in. Jesse, you will be getting a call soon.

Yep. I should have the rest tacked in tomorrow. Pounding on that thing is a stress reliever. With a 3 pound sledge, the metal bends so easy. I will have it ready to weld up soon.

I got a sheet at tractor supply a while back. I think it is either 16 or 18 guage. It is thicker than the original stuff.

I just got done welding the last little bit on the coupe. I am now ready to grind on a few spots, mostly where I welded, prime it and paint the engine bay. Once it is painted, I think I will do the brakes first. I will post up when I get the parts to start that.

I am in the middle of primering my coupe engine bay. A word of advise for free, open a door when rattle can painting under a hood. After the first can, I found the entire shop had a haze from the primer I was using. I took an air mover and stuck it under the door in front of my car. The next can didn't fog up the shop at all. When I am done primering it, I will post a few pics.

2 good things happened today. I picked up the 4 bolts neded to install the K-member, and got a box from the UPS guy. I paypaled the money to Katmandu, Eric, for the shorty headers he had for sale. He put them in the mail and I get them in less than 24 hours. They look sweet on the motor. I will take a pic tomorrow and post it up.

I think today when I am done with work, I am going to bolt the k member in. I spoke with a few people at the farm party and figure the grade 5 bolts will be fine for the k member to the frame. I still need one nut for the a arms. Once I get that I can put the a arms back on and start assembling the brakes, struts, caster camber plates, I am getting close.

I got the chassis saver on the outer fenderwells tonight. I posted 2 new pics. When that is dry I have to put another coat on the engine bay due to the runs of chassis saver running out of all the holes. Once that is dry, the k member is going in. I need 2 bolts and nuts for the a arms. Then it is spindles, struts, and brake time. This thing could be back on all 4 wheels this week.

It took a BADASSED Snap-On impact with 750 ft. lbs. of reverse torque and my air tank on 120 PSI to break my K-member bolts loose, and took just a little less than that for the control arms... so they are pretty darn tight! LOL

I have to put the entire braking system in my coupe. I can get a 93 GT master cylinder from Advance for 38.00 bucks. That is the start. I will run all new hard lines bending them myself. I am going to try and hide them as best as I can. I will need a proportioning valve too. Going to find a stock one. I will be running stock big disc on the front and stock drums for the rear. I will have to figure out the rear routing. Will need the rubber or stainless braided line for the rear. I have the rubber for the front. I will be starting this project next time I get to the shop to get some stuff done.

Thanks guy. I talked to Timido today and the only thing he reccommended was to put a tubular K member in it. I am too far along for that now. Maybe the next one. LOL. Who knows, well tonight, I am going to clearance the holes for the caster camber plates. Then find those front springs someone gave me a long time ago. I have put them somewhere and now can't find them. Sound familiar anyone? LOL. The big shop door is open.

I worked on the coupe a little tonight. I rented a coil spring compresser and tried to put the coil springs in the coupe. I got the passenger side one in but the internal tool won't come out. I tried everything I could. I used a pry bar on the spring to try to get the tool out and it slipped. I hit my wrist on the floor jack right next to me. I thought the spring broke and I lost my hand. Well it is just a hard hit. It is swelling and I have it on ice right now. It started huring a little while after I smashed it. Not right away but it is swollen. I hope I didn't break anything.

My hand is fine. No problems so far. I calledAdvance auto part to see if they had an external coil spring compresser and they do. 54 bucks to rent it. I am going to get it sunday and get the passenger side out, remove the useless tool, and install the springs. I really need to get the coupe on 4 wheels. I will probably be at my shop sunday sometime in the afternoon or evening. I will post when I get down there. I could use a hand in getting this part of the project done.

another option for the springs is to bolt up the struts to the spindle and put the spindle on the ball joint. Once that is secure, then unbolt the a-arms from the k-member and put the springs in--jack the a-arm back into position, and you are done. No compressor needed, no worries about a spring coming out and decapitating you.
I just did mine this way and it works beautifully.
Good luck. Very ambitious. I commend you.
DeckerEnt
06-22-2008, 10:12 AM
I thought of removing the a arm but the car has no motor or trans yet so not enough weight to compress the spring. When I did the passenger side, I had to add weight just to get the strut through the caster camber plate. I had to stand on the core support as well just to get it to poke through. I am learning the value of a mechanic who knows all this and doesn't have to try this and that to get someting done.

I rented an external spring compresser today. It is not going to work. I need to get the hooks 180 degrees from each other but since I am using a stock K member and a stock a arm, I can get them maybe to 8 oclock and 4 oclock. That isn't going to work. The spring is just going to bend and curve, not compress. I am out of options here. The internal compresser works IF I could get it back out of the coil, The external won't work. Any suggestions??
I am thinking on cutting notches in the a arm to allow removal of the tool.
How do you all do this??

Know anyone that has a steel strap shipping bander? I used a spring compressor to compress my old eibach front drag springs...then took them into work. Used the steel bander on our shipping dock to put 3-4 bands around each spring. Popped them in place..bolted everything up..then cut the bands off. Worked great.

I had a similiar problem with my car and like with yours theres was no motor to weigh down the car to help compress the spring with. The spring compressor gets in the way because tt hits on the lower a-arm.
I ended up compressing the spring on the work benck and then using wire to hold it in about 6 different places so that when I took off the spring compressor the spring was still short enough to get in. When I had the spring in place and everything bolted in place I cut the wire off the spring. It was a pain in the ass but it worked!
DeckerEnt
06-25-2008, 11:21 PM
Ok. A little update. The external compressers are not going to work so they are in the box and ready to return to advance. Now I can't get the internal hooks or plate in the spring to compress it. The spring is in the car now. My next option is to notch the lower a arm while the spring is in the car. I am only going to remove enough metal to get the tool out. Then I can just drop the tool out and cut the driver's a arm the same, compress the other spring and drop it in, then drop the tool out.
If I ever have to change springs in the front, I am taking it somewhere.
When I get this spring BS done, it is brake stuff. I am going to base the entire system on 93 GT stuff.
I could use another pair of hands down here sometime.

I am down here again. I got a master cylinder and some hard line today at advance. I am getting ready to hack a section out of the passenger side A arm. Once I get the tool out, I am going to throw the spring in the other side and maybe even put the front brakes on so I can get the car on all 4 wheels again. Wish me luck.

I got frustrated with the car the other night. Tonight I have 10 different carbide bits for my whiz wheel that I am going to try. I only need to remove enough metal from the a arm to get the tool out. The driver's side should be easy since the spring will not be in. I know it is late but if anyone is out, stop on in.

Why don't you just make your life alot easier and put a tubular k member and a arms on that thing. You know you will want to one day anyway and it will never be easier than it is now. BTW while you are at it you can make your life super simple by just doing coil overs. You would already have the engine dropped in if you would have gone that route.

I have the tool out of the passenger side coil spring. I really need a smoke and a beer after that one. The carbide bits I got from Harbor freight are JUNK. Now I have 1/4 shank shiny pieces of metal. I wound up using my 3 inch cut off disc and the whiz wheel and just hacking away. It is done though and it is a huge weight that just fell off my shoulders. Progress..

Got some stuff done tonight. I took a file and ground off the first 2 threads on the ball joint on the driver's side. The guy I got them from hit that one with a hammer and mushroomed it a little. The nut goes on easy now. Next I clearanced the hole in the A arm so the compresser tool falls out. I have the tool in the coil spring ready to compress and install but I need the rubber cup that goes over the ball joint under the spindle. Hopefully I will have time tomorrow to get one and a set of brake pads. Then I am ready to assemble the driver's side. I am getting excited again about the car.

Got some MAJOR stuff done tonight. I broke down and bought a new ball joint only to use the rubber boot and the cotter pin. I got the spindle on the driver's side, bolted the strut to the spindle, compressed the coil spring, installed the spring and jacked up the car to get the strut to poke through the caster camber plate. Had to put a 5 gallon bucket on the k member, then stack another one on top to weight the car down enough to get the strut to poke through. Finally got the nut on the strut and wrenched it down. Then I removed the jack and it didn't fly apart so I am happy now. Just got to get the tool out of the coil spring and it is brake rotor and caliper time. Hee Hee. Yeah Me!!!!!!

I allready told Keith about a tube K-member and how nice they are. In his defence he spent the time to make the stock K-member look Great. Cleaned up and painted real nice. I kinda dig the way he is building this coupe. It reminds me of some dude in the 60's building a Hot Rod with the skills he has and he makes up the rest along the way. Got the coupe rolled to the center of the shop again. Found a hole in the floor under the pedals. I took a few pics for before shots. This is my goal for today. I need to grind the rust out, cut new sheet steel to patch it all together, tack weld it in place, pound it all flat, then chassis saver it all top and bottom. I hope I can get it done.

I am flying on this one!!! Got all the patch panels tacked in, black rtv on the inside and under, and the inner fender rust is covered. I am waiting for the metal and myself to cool off, then back at it. I am almost ready to paint it all with chassis saver and be done.
I posted a few more pics so check em out.

Well, I got a little done tonight. I masked off all the holes in my motor and hosed it down with my own concoction of grease remover. It did an ok job. I have to do it again and use my high pressure sprayer next time to get all the gunk off my motor before I paint it Ford Gray. I am going for a mono-color for the motor. For all you MOFOs that is all the same color. LOL.

Well, I got some stuff done tonight. I got the vert wiring harness out and the better one in with mucho less wires. Also got the new gasket for the filler neck in the tank. That was a bitch but it is in and not ripped. Found a much better filler neck too than the one in the car so installing the tank should be cake. Gotta get the back point hangers cleaned up for the fuel tank straps. When that is done, the tank and new filter is going in. Need some hose to connect the return hose but I have everything else. Next work night. Cross that off the list. I have so much stuff to do but I am confident it will be at the cruise in.
If I could get a little help down here some night, I could get so much more done. How about a work night say later this week? PM me which night would work. I want to get this bitch running.

I work for beer......but honestly my plate is full.
Seems a side project is now a full time endevor.
Tomorrow for example
11am = be at the dyno to assist on two cars
6-8:30 PM = work my regular job
8:30 PM = SCCA meeting a Winton Woods, meeting with future tranny and ECU clients.
I HATE SALES people......now I have to pitch myself. Cincy SCCA just held IT Fest at Mid Ohio Aug 9-10 and I was swamped with questions. WTH? I'm here for the PARTY!
Someone even asked for my autograph.........WTH, I'm no celebrity. I'm just a redneck hillbilly playing with Hondas for now.

Got a little stuff done tonight. My old original fuel tank straps were still in the coupe. Well not all of them, just the ends on the rear mounting points. Had to cut the bolts off to get them out. Good news is that I have a set that will work. As soon as I get some fuel line for the return line, the tank is going in. I have the new fuel filter and just have to mount it because since my car is an 81, there was never a filter back there. I can't mount it till I get the tank in and see where the feed line goes. But I am ready to install the fuel tank. Gonna head home now, a little late to be working on it tonight. More later.

I should just kick myself in the head right now. I have been fighting with this fuel tank for a week now. I just found the straps I took off the car. There was no "bucket" that the tank fit into. Just a piece of it. Much less than a full bucket. Just a piece of hard plastic enough to strap the tank in between the straps. Not a full bucket. This is what I get for trying to put 93 spec stuff into an 81 body. Now I know all this stuff and I will never do it again. My next car will be turn key and go.
Keith
DeckerEnt
09-04-2008, 11:37 PM
Just got the tank back out and placed the new plastic on the bottom. This is weird. The plastic only covers the front side of the tank between the straps. It covers only half of the bottom of the tank so the straps will be metal to metal on the back of the tank.
What would it hurt if I chassis savered the bottom of the fuel tank? Since there is now going to be no protection, the chassis saver would at least give some protection from rocks and stuff. I am going to paint the "new" plastic piece black.
Now that I found the right parts, it should go in better.

DeckerEnt
09-05-2008, 01:06 PM
The plastic piece that I had covered the whole thing too. The problem is that the straps aren't long enough. The shorter one should give me enough slack to bolt it in.
Chassis saver dries like armor. It should protect the rest of the tank from rocks. No guarantee if I ever drag the bumper though. LOL

Got one more thing done today. Took the backyard smog plugs off the back of the head and put the real plugs in. Went to Ford and paid, get this, 17.xx each. OMG WTF!!!!!! Oh well. They worked. The holes were filled with carbon deposits and I mean full. I used a battery terminal wire brush cleaner and just spun it till I saw threads. It seemed to all come out dry better than a few squirts of brake cleaner. Once the carbon was cleaned out, the plugs went in fine. They did bottom out. You have to screw them in past the level of the head. I also trial fit the fenders on to see if all that welding tweeked anything. Looks like it is all still straight. Fuel lines tonight and maybe more, depending on those beers and boobs.LOL

I swear nothing on this car is easy. I have a few hours today and am trying to put in the fuel lines from the pile. Nothing is lining up where it is supposed to go. I know it is not the same car but it should be at least close. I am going to have to bend the lines around stuff like trans mount on frame, upper control arms, K member bolts, and I haven't even looked where they mount under the hood yet. I think they are pointing out into the middle and should point straight toward the bumper. This is frustrating but I have a friend who has one just sitting so I am going to go peek and see where they are supposed to be. I didn't think it would be so much trouble. I am about ready to call Craig and just use braided line. That may be easier.

Keith, I am pretty sure the structure of the cars themself were the same, I know the fuel lines on my '89 GT were on the right side (outside) of the passenger frame rail... if you are hitting the trans crossmember and k-member bolts, it sounds to me like you are trying to put the lines on the left (inside) of the framerail...
They should come to the front, and cross over under the framerail and into the engine bay...
Hope this helps

PB Blaster and line wrenches and a little patience works too..
Keith
Stangman
09-11-2008, 01:38 PM
Nope. Been there and done that. The line wrenches will round off the heads with the torque you are trying to apply, or twist and break the line. The torch would be used to heat the item that each line goes into, not the line and fitting itself, which is not what you want to heat and expand.
You can try it that way, but sometimes those connections are just plain frozen. I would bring vise grips and a torch... atleast as a back up plan

Well, one of those distractions happened again tonight but it was for the best. I was on my way to the shop, the coupe was already moved to the middle of the shop, and I called Kevin. He was working on his blue car so I offered to stop down and lend a hand. He was putting on his freshly turned rotors and he said he wanted to swap the tires with the black car but didn't want to do it right now. Well I gave him a swift kick in the rear and we swapped the tires out. Now he has the skinnys and fatties on the blue car. He started up the blue car and it sounds wicked!!!! He will make it to the cruise in but it is looking bleak for mine. Too much work to do and not enough time to do it in. Hell, it is almost 11:00 and I am just getting started on mine. Going to get the rear brake line run and hooked up as well as the last of the fuel system. Next is motor and trans.

Well I am down here again. It is sunday, the kids are in bed, and I will post what I get done tonight. My list is getting smaller. I found the clutch bolts. I now have to take the flywheel off and put on that thin plate. Totally forgot it when I dropped the motor in.

Good to hear Jake. I got the flywheel off, put on the plate and relocktighted the bolts and put the flywheel back on. I also installed the clutch. My bell housing is sitting next to my work truck soaking in a nuclear prespray that I use for de greasing nasty carpet. Gonna pressure wash it one more time and then get that in. I am going to wait for another pair of hands before the trans goes in. Maybe I will get the clutch cable and speedo cable in too. Who knows. No distractions tonight. LOL

The bell housing is in. Just for giggles I dug out the wiper motor and figured it would be easy. Noooooo. The housing changed from 81 to 87-93. I don't know where my original is either. Guess I need a wiper motor for an 81 mustang. I hope the wiring is the same. Hopefully I can just change the housing and bolt it up. Headed home now. Later.

Clutch cable is in but not mounted in the middle. Same with the speedo cable. Need to get the trans in to finish those. Put my fuel rails almost on with the injectors. Need to plumb them and those are good to go. Thanks to Dedpedal for the valve cover gaskets. Those are on there till I need roller 1.7s. LOL
Going home now....

Well, as some of you know but many of you don't, my wife kicked me out of the house tuesday morning. I had consumed a few too many keyrocks too many times and woke her up in the middle of the night stumbling around on my way to the bathroom one too many times. She says I have to make a public apology. This is it. Honey, I am so sorry for becoming the man that I am now. I have spiralled into a place that is hurtful to you and my children. I have not had a single beer since that night and will not have any more because I know what it will lead to. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me,again, and take me back. Love Keith.

Since I have been homeless and have not had any distractions tonight, I have been wrenching on the car pretty hard. I have a set of spark plugs in, and the chrome shorty headers bolted down tight. Kevin got my dash almost in, just have to drill a few holes to mount it tighter. I need to re run my clutch cable now that the headers are almost touching them. My trans is sitting next to the car ready to slide in place. So is the H pipe. I have alot of work ahead of me so back to it. Oh, I posted the above as a trial run in case she gets on here. I am putting it into an e-mail as well.

My trans is almost in. I think I am going to have to cut out my floor for the shifter. I don't want to but it looks that way. The cross member won't line up because the trans is hitting the floor. This is one of those things I should have asked about when I bought an 81 auto car. Oh well, back to the grind. That AMP is good stuff. Not tired at all....

Got my trans in tonight temporarily. I need a new bell housing. Mine, the bolt holes are stripped out. Cut out the floor around the shifter then tightened up the cross member and mount. Solid and the motor sits even lower now. Also put in my Pro 5.0 shifter. Cool. Also I found the radiator brackets and rubber spacer things. Painted them black, then installed them along with the fan shroud. Painted it black too. The resivour that Matt Johnson gave me was junk so junk yard crawlin I go for that. LOL The u-joints I got at advance auto parts are the wrong size. Hopefully I can get a pair exchanged. I will bring an old one to compare the size. That is it for tonight. The AMP is finally wearing off so I am off to bed.

Well, I am done for the night. Have to give kuddos to the guy at auto zone in florence. That store is the 24 hour one. I needed the bolts for the fan and pully on the water pump. He must have searched for a half hour but finally found the right studs and nuts for me. Puter kept telling him metric so he pulled a pump off the shelf and finally found they were american.
Picked up my clamps for my heater hoses and got 2 of the 4 installed.
The trans and new to me bell housing is back in the car. Now that the motor is level, I looked across the fenders and the hood is going to be close. With the spacer under the upper I will have maybe a quarter inch. Hope it works. 2:00 am is a little late to start on anything else so it is off to sleep for me. I have alot of stuff for tomorrow to do. 10 hours till the cruise in. See you all there. I will be the guy in a black SBZ shirt, LOL, who looks tired as hell.

Had a little time today so I am going to install the nose piece. Got the bumper in, just need to find those bolts. Have epoxy for the studs in the plastic. Hope it hardens right and tightens up to the fenders. Once the nose is on, I will take a few pics of my progress. It is coming right along.

Due to my situation at home, I am putting my project on hold for a while. I went to the farm last night and picked up the trailer. I will be finishing some little things on the car today and loading it up with all my parts I can fit inside. Then load it on the trailer and take it to the farm for storage. I will pick up a good car cover and a cable/lock system for the cover. The farm party could turn into a wrenching party. Sorry to all who have been following this build. I know I am so close to driving it. It will get finished. Just a little later.

Keith maybe you just need to scale back on how often you work on it. Believe me I know how it is to want it done now but that is not always possible. Family comes first as well as your physical well being but don't just quit on it. Maybe work out a deal with the wife that one night a week you wrench away and maybe some on the weekend. Good luck.
Stangman
10-01-2008, 11:32 AM
Well, if that won't work, atleast the upside is that the car has been rust-proofed underneath and won't dilapidate from sitting in a barn.
Best of luck to ya Keith!

A huge thanks to Holly for unlocking this thread. I have a plan for the car now. The farm party is when it is going to start. I will be bringing down some parts and tools and get some little stuff done in the afternoon. Once everyone gets there, the shooting will begin. If everyone wants to take a break from pulling triggers, we can turn wrenches. I am not expecting to drive it home or anything but a little progress would be cool. After the party, i will grab the work van and go down and get the car and bring it to the shop. That way I will have something to do over the winter. More later.

Well since little to no shooting for me at the farm party, if I make it at all, How best to work off a hangover on Sunday by wrenching :)
Two excuses for not making the farm party.
1) Points series race and I'm the single fast lap as well track record holder for my class.
2) Mom's 70th Birthday.
Guess I won't be racing/wrenching/shooting.
