Dorsey did my first tat....the custom tribal piece on my shoulder....I went to him based on his rep and he did a terrible job (light fill-in, jagged lines, fill outside the outline, etc..). I had Tony Beuke up at Beelistic Tattoo clean it up and add a bunch to it since then making a 1/2 sleeve. I love it now. Maybe Dorsey just wasn't "into" doing a simple tribal, but if that was the case he should have told me that up front and I would have gone to someone else.

Chris did a piece on my wife Emily and it looked great. She has 5 different tats all done by different artists.

Your results may vary.

I would just find someone who you are comfortable with and have em draw you something.

A lot of tattoos is the aftercare.....no offense but anyone could get a tribal tattoo and not take care of it, and even if the best artist on Earth gave it to you, if you don't take care of it during healing, it's gonna look like crap. I'm not saying you DIDN'T, but judging by the work i've seen Mike do (including the 15 hours worth on my shoulder) i find it impossible to believe that he couldn't bust out a tribal in his sleep. He also fixed my forearm pieces that 3 other artists couldn't seem to get right.

Also Craig, this is probably way far fetched but if you want arguably the best portrait work you can get, do a web search for Tom Renshaw. You'll probably be on a waiting list for a couple years and you'll have to travel to get it, but with the exception of 1-2 other people, he's untouchable when it comes to portrait work.

Whoever you go to make sure you look at alot of their work both in pictures and in person. That's the best resume out there.

Obviously I recommend Dana's. But Kore who was mentioned is really the best in town but he's really hard to get work done.

Why not apply to be on LA Ink and have Kat do it? That show is all about having a good story behind the tat. SInce it's a portrait, I'm guessing there is.

Also something else i'll throw out there....some artists just aren't the best for some styles. People have their flavor of work just like any other kind of artist. I would never go to Mike for some new school graffiti looking work, but he's probably first on my list for a Japanese style sleeve. When i wanted my half sleeve of a 16th century painting, i knew exactly who to go to.

I went up to Columbus a couple months ago to see Durb up at Stained Skin, and he ended up not being there and i wanted to get this simple little nothing piece, so i had to do the portfolio decision between two guys i wasn't familiar with....i just went through and looked for work that matched the style that i wanted to get, and i look for crisp clean and even lines (you don't want lines that are think and thin and choppy) and one of the guys there had a piece he'd done of a Fender Strat, and it was calf size and he did all 6 strings...and i tell ya it was some of the straightest lines i've ever seen in tattooing, so he got the job since this was some tiny fine line work.

I might go and set up an account somewhere and post up some pics of my half sleeve if anyone wants to see.

A lot of tattoos is the aftercare.....no offense but anyone could get a tribal tattoo and not take care of it, and even if the best artist on Earth gave it to you, if you don't take care of it during healing, it's gonna look like crap. I hear what you're saying, but trust me....I took care of it. He had about 4 hours in the piece over two sittings (yes...just a black tribal on my shoulder, upper arm, and traps) plus touch-ups and after healing I just wasn't happy. About a year later, Tony cleaned up the lines and added two more pieces to it over the past few months. I'm happy now.

I've seen a lot of Dorsey's work and I just don't think he was into it. I think I would give him another shot with something Japaneese or more his style.....the guy is talented and I know that, but my first impression just wasn't very good. Or....maybe I'm just picky and I failed to say anything to him when I should have. :dunno:

Yeah i dunno....i guess anyone can do a crappy tattoo?

Just since we're talking about it, here's a few pics of my shoulder. These are the later pics after about 4 sessions and the second day of healing. The colors are a lot more bold than they ended up being which is what we wanted, so it looks more like the painting. We also mirrored it to fit my arm better.

And here's the original painting by Luca Giordano:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1413/1478795135_0df21a8186_o.jpg

I wanted to try to make it look like you could really see paint brush strokes in the colors so it's real washy looking. I love it...couldn't be happier. I'm even thinking about making a whole sleeve out of it and having Mike piece together a few more pieces of paintings.

This couldnt be more true...many people think well I got tattoo's so they dont take care of new ones like they did with their first one...god himself could put a tattoo on you and if you dont follow directions your gonna end up with a mesed up piece. No two tattoos heal or react the same on any part of the body...to one person a particular area might not swell and heal very fast...to another...it could go the opposite direction. There too many variables in the tattoo art even if you go to the same artist, over and over...the end result can always vary. Different needles and techniques require absolute precision and you can go to anyone and catch someone on a bad day...it all depends...most of it falls on the customer afterwards...I give people a 2 page instruction on aftercare and make them sign stating that they got the aftercare instructions...and 9 times out of 10 it gets ignored or trashed.

Point is there are many great artist and each have their own specialty...so in the end pick one that is best suited for the piece you want done..It would be like going to Ken to tune a Nissan pickup...Of course I dont know anything...I only do it for a living...:D

i think those shows show people what a good tattoo should look like. there are so many hacks out there that buy tattoo equipment and think that makes them a tattoo artist.

i think most of the people on la ink are awesome and garver in miami kicks ass. one of my best friends was on miami ink and got work done by garver and im jealous.

See I think those shows cause the hacks that you speak of...they watch and go...ohh maybe I can tattoo, just check out some of the amateur tattoo sites and almost everyone of them say they bought equipment cause of those shows...When I got into tattooing I did it the right way and did all the research and learned from some of the best around the area.... The artist on the shows are undoubtedly some of best in the business...but at the same time they are not showing all the sub-par tats they did as they got to the point they got which many of the people on the show have been tattooing for countless years hell I think Kat started when she was 14, most of them did the same thing and bought equipment and started at it learning from other artist. Plus they (TLC) photoshop and airbrush the hell out of the after photos its insane!....I couldnt tell you how many times me and todd talk about how many of our clients come in and start talking about those shows...its annoying!

Here is a trick you may want to employ if you are not sure of the artists finished product. Some folks will have their tat first applied with sharpie markers. It gives you an idea of the artist's talents and how you will like your tat. If you dont like it, its not nearly as permanent. If you think its what you want, you go back and have it inked in.

While I don't have anything personally, I really admire Dana's work!

It's a lot like car guys and how they stick with what they know....if all a person know is one tattoo artist, then surely he is the best in the universe. People need to educate themselves on this subject just as some close minded people in the car world need to.

Thought I would bring this back up since we were talking about tattoo shows. Sitting here on the couch with the laptop and London Ink is on in the background. I looked up and the tattoo artist looked familar. I then realized that he used to come to my band's shows and I hung out with friends of his about 12 years ago. I looked him up on the website and he used to work at Permanent Productions with Dorsey. If I'm remembering the guy correctly he was super crazy and a mega partier. He fit right in with my band. :)
