View Full Version : I'm looking into getting a beater. What do you think about Accords?

I currently drive a '94 SHO and it's in great condition. I haven't had it a year yet and already put a little over 15k miles on it. Now it will probably see upwards of 20k miles a year. Since the car is in great condition, I'd hate to see it become treated like a beater and maybe sell it to buy something else that I wouldn't feel as bad to put the miles on.

Right now one car I have in mind is a non-riced out mid 90s Accord. Ideally I'd like to stay under $2,500 ($3k max), 5-speed and average around 25mpg. The SHO has awesome gas mileage (around 26mpg on interstate) and don't want to trade for something that gets less than that.

I have a 92 accord 2dr.... great car I was lucky and scored mine cheap with working a/c

when you get the car have the waterpump and timing cover changed and then keep the oil changes and they will last forever I sold my last 90 with 220,xxx on it and the guy is still driving it

Keep the SHO. Why let someone else put the miles on it?

I've read the SHOs aren't as reliable at the higher mileage. So far the car has been great (after replacing waterpump and radiator) but it can be a little pricey to fix. If I had extra room, I'd buy a beater and keep the SHO but that's not an option.

It only has 113k miles on it now but at 5-600 miles a week, it'll be in the 150k mile range before I know it.

I would stick to 5 speed Civics before i went with an Accord. The tranys are harder to find and way more expensive. Although i had an '87 Accord once, bought it for $500 and it had about 280k miles on it, i drove it all summer and put it up over 300k, then sold it for $500. It ended up having a cracked head and burned about a quart a week but still ran great.

I have a '92 Accord 2dr 5sp as my daily driver beater. I paid $1700 for it almost 2 1/2 years ago now with 174K on it. I now have 215K on it....runs just as good if not better than when I bought it. I've put a few hundred in it in parts...new tires/brakes/cv shafts/tune up. I average ~28mpg with it with mixed driving. I a/c even worked when I bought it...but the condenser blewout this summer. I like it for a beater....but I may upgrade to something a bit newer/nicer in ~6 months to a year.

Accords are EXCELLENT daily drivers. I've owned a 92, a 95, and a 2001.

My old Civic auto did pretty well as a beater. Now my 96 escort takes me to/from work with no problem.
