While taking apart the top end of Brandon's motor this weekend, we found this nasty, orangish build up inside of his EGR spacer, as well is these white salt-looking things in there as well. Any idea what caused this? Is it just old nasty coolant build up?

Looks that way to me

Yep, and it also looks like it might have been seeping into the intake air flow.

Its oxidation. The orange is oxidation from the cast iron parts, the salt looking stuff is oxidation from the aluminum parts. The coolant or lack thereof had no corrosion inhibitors left aparently.

Its that new orange diecast radiator coolant. Turns mainly internals this awsome orange color.

Thats the thing, there aren't any cast iron parts around there. The TB, EGR spacer, and intake manifold are all aluminum. Also, when we drained the coolant, it was orange too, so it might just be old nasty coolant build up.

Isn't the block iron? The water will transport the rust anywhere it touches

Yes, the block is iron.

Any reason why the coolant would be orange?

Its just old coolant kinda like oil after awhile it looses its "viscosity" or in coolants case it looses its protective agents. Once that occurs its like water on raw steel it'll slowly corrode the inside of the block making surface rust which during a period of time of circulation the once green collant will turn a rustic orange color.

So to sum it up short its just old coolant just needed flushed ahwile ago

Another way it will change like that is a leak some where in the system and letting air inside.

The coolant is not that old.... MFIELD hit the nail on the head. One of the TB bolts snapped and air leaked in that way.

BECAUSE THERE IS RUST IN IT. How many times do you want me to say it.

Also, just because the coolant that was in it most recently wasn't old doesn't mean that it never had old unprotecting coolant in it.

Good info about collant and corrision issues.
