OK....this is a rant and a plead both.

After Walter's little off track agricultural excursion I took a quick walk around the pits and took some mental notes of a few cars. I am surprised at how many sub-10 second cars DO NOT have roll cages. I also noticed how many folks have been running sub 14 second times and not wearing helmets.

I'm not going to point fingers, but let's get serious here folks. Hitting the wall on the big end (or the trees or each other) doing well over 150 mph is serious - dead serious. There is a reason why tracks are SUPPOSED to tech inpect to NHRA or IHRA standards before you are allowed to run. Yeah I know some of you run at Tri-State (or other tracks) because Edgewater (or other tracks) is too strict on their tech policy.

I'm not going to preach, I just don't want this little community of go fast enthusiasts to lose any more people. Last year was devastating enough. Take a look at what you are building. Spend the time and the bucks you need to to assure you are as safe as possible. Roll Cages, proper harness, current helmets, fire extinguisher, even fire retardent clothing..what ever it takes to walk away from anything that MIGHT happen. Craig and the other speed shops can get you fixed up with what you need, Rigid or the other fab shops can get the cage in your car. Its the best money you can spend for what you hopefully never use.

Please build the safety first and the go fast next! I hope the tracks step it up and start being more firm about their tech and policies.

Kennebellcobra and I were talking about this last night. Your car gets faster and faster and you really don't think about the danger involved in going that fast. People think that it's just a track formality, but proper safety equipment could definately be the difference between life and death should you crash at 120+. Walter's experience should be a wakeup call to everybody that it can happen to you. I know I want to change a few things on my car this winter to make it a bit safer, it passes tech now but I would like to survive a crash not just pass tech.

....and it's a cost most wives\girlfriends will never complain about!

Spending money on safety stuff is money well spent. I've very glad I upgraded my 6pt bar to a 8pt cage (cert. to 8.50). It also stiffened my coupe up even more..which should help the suspension work better. I'm also seriously considering adding a fire suppession system to my car. How much do you value your body/life?

I've acutally thought about a fire supression system myself. At the least I will invest in a nice halon extinguisher. With my history I can attest to good safety equipment being a worthwhile investment. I smacked head first into the wall at around 100mph and walked away without a scratch.

Absolutely, I have way more cage than my car needs at this point anyway but I will hopefully walk away if anything does happen. I have already put plans in the works for better brakes and other things also.

Seeing Walter at Tri-state does really make you think and I was the one that ran a 10.19 last year with no cage and just factory seat belt:dummy: Definalty a good idea to have as much safety equipment as possible.

I know a few people who had bad wrecks that were lucky to walk away allmost unscratched because of the saftey gear.

Cage and harness will added this winter for sure, along with a few other safety measures.

Safety equipment is something I seldom think about, I just do it.

Dave, thank you for putting this out there. I thought about it, but I don't know this guy (Walter) and was affraid to offend anybody.

But you are absolutely right. I thought the same thing, about kennebellcobra's ride, last year. He has take the steps, to insure his safety. :bigthumb

Lets all think about this, as we prepare our cars, for next season. We do not not need a bad accident, to make us realize how bad it could end up.
