Thought ALOT about doing OTR trucking as I was about ready to retire from the USAF.

Couldn't take being away from home (and NOT getting "ANY") for such long periods of time!

I've always wanted to do long haul.....esp. now with APU's so your not sitting their idling the motor.

Laptop with a wireless card, surf while on downtime, but also access for maps/gps/directions/traffic updates.

new jersey sucks ... the whole east coast sucks to drive in ... the people are rude and the weather is shitty ... i've been out east for the past 4 months, it sucks ass ... new york city is the pits ... try to stay south or west for as long as you can ... i ran into snow 3 weeks ago off of 80 in pa and nj ... ran into ice and snow in west va and va, they shut 64 down for 1 hour to salt the mountains ... im glad im off the road ... i hate truck stops and sick of the road ...

get a laptop and a wireless sprint card, at least you will be able to wack off to internet porn  good luck ... oh and dont spend your entire check on lizards, save some for a gun while you're in ny city ...

try to use the pa turnpike, if you hit snow ~ it will only be in the mountains ... overall, its not too bad ... get about 6 months in with werner and keep your nose clean, you should be able to find some local work with good pay ... for now, you will have to do the dirty like we all did ... its a great experience and i think everyone should experience it ... you appreciate life more ...

well said and good advice! if you dont like the road, or east coast bullshit, you gotta put your time in...take your lumps, but it will usually make you a better driver (as far as weather related stuff) in the long run.
i've hauled everything from 63,000lb steel coils to a 53 footer full of loose ping pong balls in all types of weather, and through the process of elimination, i was finally able to get on at UPS pulling doubles from hub to hub. best job i have EVER had... after 13+ years of the other bullshit, I'm very thankful!
good luck guy!

i was finally able to get on at UPS pulling doubles from hub to hub.Interesting thing about UPS doubles is you almost NEVER see one SPEEDING!! :cool2: That alone to me show that UPS hires quality drivers with good discipline. :bigthumb

Also, I can give you an "inside" tip from working with the Ohio State Patrol for several years. (I was an OSP Auxiliary Trooper from 92-98).

MOST, (NOT ALL) Troopers do NOT go out of their way to **** with truckers.

Yea, you'll get jammed for speeding/not wearing a belt (like the 4-wheelers), but the "regular" road Trooper does NOT do vehicle inspections.

Just the ODOT Trooper (the one with the RED light bar and blue decals) is assigned to do that.

BTW, they way the OSP has the reputation (in the trucking community) for being one of the hardest on speeders in the country! Especially, in the Northern Miami Valley!

Just DON'T GET CAUGHT USING IT!!

Hide it REAL GOOD before you head into the scales! ;)

that, and if you have any kind of accident, and they pull your trip data, and you were speeding, you are out the door!
they pay us by the hour, and they know how long it takes to go from A-B, so no sense in speeding at all.
the travel times with them are a non issue, its factored into the route and the shipping schedules. where they do get bitchy, is on your pull times from each hub.

another thing that is good about UPS, is that we rarely get pulled around at the scales. lol...dont know if its from a good rep for maintenance, or if UPS pays them well!;)

i know a few guys running those Texas Stars. they do work, but piss a lot of people off though.:D

it's a linear amplifier thats illeagal as hell w/o being a licensed ameteur HAM operator.
it think they are in the strength range of 300-600 watts depending on the model. these are the things that set off car alarms, and bleed over into AM and FM radio bands and terrestrial television broadcasts, when the mic is keyed up. thats why i said they pissed a lot of people off. :)

to give you an idea of how powerful these are, the legal limit on Citizens Band is 4 watts!

I used to run a 1400 Watt MOBILE linear!!!  :bigthumb

Had my cranked up Cobra 148 (all mods known the mankind), swinging out 32 Watts (PEP) running into a SilverBullet (100 Watt-"Modulator). Then from there into a Boomer 400 Watt AMP and finally into a TX-800 8-Pill AMP!!

Had it running in an 85 Buick Riviera with a 150AMP alternator running (2) 1000 cca batteries. Even with all that juice, that setup would "modulate" the headlights at night when I talked!

I could blow-out trucker's (that where acting like A-holes) CB (receivers) by simply pulling along side their cabs and aligning my Wilson 1000 with their mirror mounted antennas. All it would take is one loud whistle into the microphone! LMAO!!!

It would throw a 10dB signal from my driveway here in Troy to my buddy's base station in Kettering (25 miles away)! :bigthumb

I GOT STORIES!! :D

Here's one you can believe or not for ya!

There was (is) an old local dude running around in an old black van that has an AM radio station tube (30,000 WATTS) setup in it!! I SAW IT MYSELF WITH MY OWN (2) EYES!!

He had an array of batteries (6-8 IIRC) setup in the back along with the "TUBE". The tube was about the size of a (5) Gallon bucket by itself.

IIRC, he also had (3) 200 AMP alternators custom mounted under the hood.

Can you say "RADIATION CHEMOTHERAPY" ??!!

I personally would NOT want to be anywhere near his van while he was talking !!

Mobile (Solid State) Linears range from (10) Watts up past (2000 Watts). :bigthumb I used to sell them to truckers alongside the highway. :tongue2: :coo1:
