The Mexican block can be identified by, for example, C8AM stamped on the block (unlike the C8OE or C8AE). The M in the # is for the Mexican block. They have a higher nickle content for strength and wider main bearing caps. Buying a Ford racing block might be a better option. They are available for under $300 if you can't find the mexican block. They are fairly rare.

The Mexican blocks are the wierd ones. They are so sought after because of there strength,it comes from a high nickel content in the metal. The way you tell a mexican block is from two big nodules on the front of the block a couple inches below the deck where the heads sit. They are a couple inches in diameter and stick out about an inch. There's two of them on either side of the block.
Mostly found in utility vehicles:
Econoline vans, trucks, and also they replaced them under warranty.

They have a casting boss on the front of the block. Check out the pic in this link, for some reason I can't post pics.

They also have casting #'s including D1ZM-AA. They made these all the way up until 1998, there's more of them around than most people think. The main caps are very similiar to the old 289 HiPo caps.

mine has a "M cast in the top of block next to dist. hole.the theory about nickle content is false. they are slightly better than the roller blocks with better caps. there are some marginal differences you would have to measure to tell the difference, nothing like comparing a dart block. mm&ff did a write up a while back on different blocks, if i find the issue i'll post it. i feel it is a great option to the sportsman block that ford offered. i did have to use a set of comp cams retro roller lifters to use a roller cam (your stock roller lifters will not work) so there is a little more money to use better parts than with just a roller block
