View Full Version : I HATE VW's!!!
just got done putting a very expensive alternator in the moms car....and i am defintly not proud of my heritage!! that thing is sooooo over engineered its not even funny. to pull the alternator out, i had on both sides a combined amount of 1/32 of an inch that was getting stuck in the sub frame and the intake manifold....dumb dumb.....i think it is funny how VW was the easiets car to work on in the 60's and 70's but now is just a pain...EVEN TO CHANGE THE OIL IS NOT EASY..grrrr i hate this car and i think it hates me.

I have a buddy that was a long time Ford mechanic and then went to and indpendent. So he for some reason got stuck with all the VW stuff and he says the same thing. Major PITA

60-70 VW = 90's Honda Civic as far as ease of working on them.
Unless you know the "trick" on a Honda Civic, to remove the alt. you have to yank the drivers side axle.
Try having your first Mustang being a 75 Mustang II fastback......talk about a nightmare!

That's why I am glad we got rid of Rachel's old VW. Looked some like some kraut on an acid trip designed the engine bay. Talk about a PITA to work on!

Trust me I know. I've had over 25 vw's in the last 4 years. The only one I've not owned is a Scirroco. My Turbo GTI was the straw the broke the camels back. After breaking and pulling the trans 5 times (the motor countless times) I said f*ck it to FWD's. Timing belts seam to be the worst. The VR6's have timing chains that you have to pulls the damn trans to get to.

I don't think they are too bad, once you get the hang of VW's and audi's there not to hateful. Just have a supply of torque bits and spline drives.

Not too bad like having to yank a motor to replace a turbo on an Audi with a 2.7T? lol

i've got a gti vr6 and it's a dream to work on. you definitely have to look at it differently than you do most cars, but once you get it figured out they are a breeze. i have heard horror stories but i've had great luck out of mine. i beat the life out of it and all that's ever "needed" to be replaced in 115k were front brake pads and a new belt tensioner. it's been on the juice since 20k miles too.
