O.K. help the bowtie guy with some blue oval tech. I'm looking at putting this 86 302 in my old 65 Mustang. I look in the mail order books to figure out what oil pan I need and they stop at the 74 year blocks. I need a front sump pan to be on this, which I have, but I don't know if it will fit, you know with the one piece rear main and all (chevy is different between the 1 and 2 piece seal blocks). I would also like to use my old timing cover so I can hook a mechanical fuel pump back up and use the old style water pump (the inlet needs to be on passenger side to match up w/ my radiator. I want to convert to EFI later, but right now I just need to make it all work with what I've got.

you should be able to use the pan my last motor I bought had a 68 pan on it and I put a fox pan with no issues.... also run the timing cover you can just block off the fuel pump hole when you go efi

DJ, I think you will need the correct oil pump or mabbe just the pickup. I dont think there will be any issues with using an older timing cover. In fact, Im pretty sure that the oil dipstick is located there so you will need to block the dipstick hole in the block as well.
I have a 95 shortblock here that you can use to mock up things if it will help.

your correct on the pickup... oil pump will be fine....
You can use the old timing cover with no problem. One thing to note is that some EFI engines don't have a fuel pump eccentric so you would have to get the proper timing chain and eccentric. An 86 probably does have an eccentric , but it is something to keep in mind. I do believe all SB pans will interchange ( as far as bolting to the block). You should only have to change to the proper pickup. The pump should be fine. Dedpedal is tight about the dipstick to plug the block with something.

Thanks for the help guys. A few more trips to cincy speed and I think I should be in good shape to install this thing come spring time!
