I just purchased a remanufactured 302 out of 68 GT. I am putting it in place of my inline 6. I also just purchased a t-5 that I am going to have rebuilt, to replace the 3-speed that is in there now.
ok, My first question is; Will any 302 5.0 bellhousing work. I know that I can get any 5.0 flywheel and then I'll get a King Cobra clutch, but I am not sure about the bellhousing.
Next, is the rear end. I think that it is an 8inch rear end (I don't know the gear). will that work or do I need to get an 8.8 with like a 3.55 or something? Other than that and wiring, I think that it's a pretty easy swap. Thanks for all your help.

I talked to Steve earlier, I have some swap articles hiding somewhere in my room, i will dig them out...

I know that an 8.8 out of a fox like Steves wouldnt work too easily... It is not a leaf spring mounted rearend... Although an explorer 8.8 might work, and the newer ones have disc brakes. I say go with a 9-inch out of an older truck or a mustang if you can get one for a reasonable price, the bolt patterns for the wheels should be the same as a mustang on the older trucks.

There is an adapter plate that you can buy to run a T5 behind a toploader bellhousing and keep your original clutch linkage... If you want to go with a fox style cable clutch with adj. quadrant and firewall adj. you need to use the Fox bellhousing from a V8 car... as for whats involved in getting a cable clutch to retrofit into a first gen is beyond my knowledge.... But that thing would be waaaay cool if you fuel injected it!

As I see it, you will need to get a 302 bell housing for the clutch linkage in the car. Late 5.0s used a cable type which would require adding the proper pedal assembly. Too much work IMO.You might be able to adapt/fab something to work with your z bar and the 5.0 bell tho. Next, your 68 302 is a different imbalance than a later 302. 28 oz vs 50 I think.

As for the rear, its so many options. I doubt anything will be a bolt in other than a mustang specific 8 or 9 inch. The later explorer with discs sounds like a good move if the track width is the same. You can allways cut the spring perches off and reweld them where you need. However, you would have to revamp the whole brake system to use the discs on the rear.
Sounds like a cool swap. Good luck with it and take lots of pics.

I have a bullit proof bell housing with the adapter for sale, you need that adapter then a t-5 will fit. You will need to get a crossmember for the trans.. Mustang monthly has agood story on the swap..
The rearend should be fine later you could install a 9-inch.. If you're interested call me 513-377-1911 Doug

I read somewhere in the last year that someone is making aftermarket parts to beef up a 8in rear. I would think you would be fine with it unless you start to really step up the horsepower. I think it was either strange or Currie on the 8in stuff.

The easy way is to get an early 6-bolt bellhousing, and run your stock linkage. You will also need a trans. crossmember, and to have the driveshaft shortened. The 302 swap is no big deal, and the 8" will be fine until you start making serious power.
