he asked this on the cougar website I post on:
my buddy has an 85 mustang, and we are trying to determine if it's a roller motor. Can any one tell me when for sure it was available? It's a carbed engine, 4V with auto trans.
the vin looks like this:

anyone have the answer to this?

'85 was the first year for the roller motors, so yes :D
Here's some useful info on the '85s:

If I remember correctly 85 5 speed cars were roller but the CFI cars stayed flat tappet though the block was drilled and setup for a roller motor.

85 as much as i can remember had the roller motor.Like SS said,it was the first year for it.With flat top pistons and really poopy flowing heads.

Actually the '85 pistons are the same as the forged '87+ pistons they used until they switched to hypers, and the '85 heads just marginally worse than E7s (basically just a tad more compression with E7 vs. E5's). It was the '86s that had flat top pistons (well, they're all flat tops but the '86s didn't have any valve relief cut into them and the heads were terrible). Basically from '85 on up (excluding the '86) the short block is the same except for slight cam differences and then the switch to hyper pistons. In the end you can do anything to an '85 block that you can an '87+...the bad egg was the '86.

If it is a 85 auto it should be a CFI car. I would double check it is the factory engine before you do anything. If it is an 85 block it would be a roller CFI or not.

85 CFI car had a roller block but had a flat tappet cam installed only the 4bbl/5speed cars got the roller cam also. 86 went to all roller cams
