I recently installed a pair of 275/40s Kuhmos on the rear of my Stang (in my Sig). The traction is alot worse than the bald 245/45 Goodyear Gatorbacks that were on it.

The car is basically a fair weather only driver that I do ROMP on frequently out on country roads. It's not much fun sitting there spinning when I could be experiencing G FORCES !!

What would be the next step in the process of gaining traction (least expensive) ??

Call UPR for some control arms and your favorite local speed shop for some adjustable shocks and drag radials.

i went from a 2.0 60ft on bald dry rotted street tires to a 2.4 on new tires. i guess it looses traction because the tread on the tires folds. hell i dont know

There's just not enough sidewall on a 40 series tire. It would take one hell of a suspension setup to make that stick. The cheap way is to use them as driving tires, and pick up slicks or drag radial type tires for racing.

40 series tires are two small if you had 50 or 55 you would do a lot better maybe 265/50

Problem is that I "race it" ALL THE TIME out on the back country roads around here!

I'll see how they do once it warms up somemore. May have to swap them out for some 50/55 profile tires.

The Kumhos i've driven on weren't very great to begin with (got'em on my car right now) and they're definitely a sunny day tire so right now while it's cold out you're not gonna get any traction...right now mine will break loose under WOT in 3rd and i know my car isn't putting down enough power for that...the tires are just cold and not hooking.

That said though, i drove my buddy's car at the track on 245/45/17s and cut a 1.90 with them but that was once and the best of the day, most were around 2.0.

Yep, M/T D.R.'s, what kind of lower control arms do you have. It's hard to beat HPM Megabite Jr.'s on a street car. I have had 1.45 60' w megabite jr.'s and et streets.

So you have Kumhos? Great. Care to tell us which tire? They do make more than one you know.

Just OEM suspension right now. How much of a difference would new control arms make on a street only car ?

Uppers, lowers, drag radials, and some adjustable shocks and struts would do wonders.

The 712 is actually kind of a hard compound tire. Its a compromise between wear and traction. They are pretty good in rain though.

Drag radials are the best hope for ya.

This is a pic of my truck with the Mickey Thompson Drag Street Radial.

They make them in this pattern for lower profile applications, but in a 17" wheel it looks like the best closest tire is 27.2" tall, which may work for I am not positive. Go onto the site and check out the sizes.

It never get's driven in the rain and I don't care about wear too much.

I'd like to be able to drive it in the winter when the roads are DRY.

Only thing I really need is COLD/DRY weather traction.

How well do DRs hook up in COLD weather ??

A buddy of mine was running ET Streets (not the radials, the cheater slicks) on his bullets and said traction was so good that it was almost no fun driving it. Some of you know him (Ronny) he had the mineral grey coupe with the supercharger. I wouldn't get caught in the rain with'em though.

I like to go out on backroads sometimes and just do burnouts! FOR STRESS RELIEF !! I'm serious! :bigthumb

How well do snow tires (Soft compounded) hook in cold/dry weather ?
