View Full Version : best way to go about 5 lug conversion plus strong axles

this car is straight as hell, so i'm gonna try to set it up right, gonna cage it right away and tie the frame, and work the suspension in prep for big power

thinking 31 or 33 spline axles, firgure stay with the 8.8

i'd like to be able to fit at least 10, maybe even 12" wide wheels under the car

plans are to run 10's

Ricky has run 11.40's on 28 spline Mosers. I would think the 31's would be plenty.

Quite a few guys are running 10.5's under a fox, but I hear nothing but probelms when the car is lowered, goes over bumps or launches, and quad shocks. I would stick with a 10" wheel.

You may as well go ahead and mini tub it if you plan to run that wide of a wheel. You could get away w/ a 10in but no way on the 12. 31 spline axles should be fine. As far as the conversion it just depends on your budget. You could do the sn95 spindle/brake swap to the front and rear. You could just upgrade to aftermarket brakes ie Baer or ssbc for example. The cheap way is to use Lincoln Mark 7 front rotors and ranger rear drums which is the way I have mine for now. It all depends on how much money you wanna spend.

You can run 15" bogarts on 4 wheel cobra discs :D:D

Sure, if you like stock brakes :) j/k. I don't know how well those axles would hold up to 10 second power.

most of all those parts are factory ford parts, i.e. ranger and lincoln. Cheapest route is moser or strange 5 lug axles and ranger drums. For the front I would do sn95 spindles with 99+ PBR dual piston calipers. Stronger axles for the launching and more stopping power also.

as far as the rear goes, if i pick up some 31 splines in 5 lug and some droms, is that all i need for the rear?

and then pick up a set of rotors for the front for now?

i'd go ahead and pick up a good diff and some gears too

If you go to 31 spline axles in the rear, you are going to need a new diff. The stock diff is 28 spline.

whats a good diff to go with, i don't wanna do a spool, i know a detroit locker is noisy, but it worked great on my 99

I believe they came factory in maybe explorers or some ford trucks? I never researched it, but just use one of those and put some new clutches in it.

Terry pick up a used 31 spline Traction loc from a cobra usually about 100.00 you can buy new drums from KOI for 19.99 a side and then all you need is some 31 spline axles and your good to go

On my car I use slotted factory replacement rotors ( not needed ), hawk brake pads, stainless braided lines. I had no problem stopping from 125/130 at kilkare. Using a beefed up trac loc is by far the cheapest way to go, Chad393na went 10.50's with a trac loc, 1.4 60's. Another option is swapping the housing ends to a 9"(that way you dont have to run c clip elim's) getting custom axles, and using explorer rear disc, they clear 15" wheels, and you can buy brake pads at autozone. If you build a custom rear, you can shorten the housing 3/4"-1" per side. You could run a 15x10 w 5.5" b.s. with a shortened rear.

Rick 93 coupe did this exact rear, look in his buildup thread "under pressure" for pics.

If you buy a used explorer rear, you can salvage the brakes, tracloc, and gear ( usually 3.73 ). You will need someone with fab skills to build the rear. We use a guy named Mike peirron here in Dayton that does great work for reasonable cash.

Also, you would be surprised by how much of a difference changing your brake fluid makes. Alot of people are using 100k mile brake fluid.

Dont forget also that the ford show in Columbus is just a couple of weeks away. You might be able to find some things there also. That is why i have not ordered anything yet. I am waiting on this show to get what i can for cheap and no shipping to boot.

I ran a trac lock and 31 splines on my car for years going 9s and 1.34 60 foots you can pick up a set of mosers for about 250 and about 100 in new drums and fronts for the auto zone and you can find trac locks around for about 100 bucks . All that should last you a long time as long as it a auto . I run 4 lug aerospace fronts and drum bakes and it stops me at 144 :)

got a guy that buys cars here at the dealership, cheapies, he races a few older camaros, he called a buddy, says he has a complete explorer rear end, 4.10s' disc brakes,

he wants $400 for it,

is that a good price?

maybe i should see if he has the sn95 spindles, what is the benefit of the sn 95 spindles btw?

I believe 96 and up, the 91& up are drum. Rick paid $450 for his, but I picked one up for $120 at a swap meet last yr.

okay,

heres the initial plan

rob is going to cage it and mini tub it for me and some subframes. Also going to do some coil overs on the rear.

so, i'll have to decide if i'm gonna do the 10 or 12" wide wheel.

as far as the fronts, i was thinking about doing the whole sn95 spindle thing, but if i'm going to have more of a drag suspension, can't i just pick up coil overs for an 89?

are the sn95 spindles going to be that different?

I run 10" wheels w/no mini tub. But either way, weld magnums would be SUWEEEET.

call cincy speed and get axles the ft rotors are from a 87 mark 7 and th e drums are from a 89 ford ranger you need a 9 inch drum all that stuff coust me about 380 at my door

If you are gonna mini tub it have Rob Narrow the rear use 9" ends and get the Explorer rear disc set up. Run 12x15 Rims for 325-50-15s ???? What tires are you going to run? If you are gonna mini Tub it Fill em up
