View Full Version : Vinny Barber's 88mm Turbo 2005 Mustang GT

Some of you may recognize Vinny's car. Last year it had a F1C Procharger on it. After getting alot of the bugs worked out in the car, we didn't really get it down the track very well toward the end of the year. The motor was also due for a freshen up so Vinny decided to make a switch to a Precision 88mm Turbo.

Here's a picture from last year with the Procharger

http://www.modulardepot.com/barberweb/images/5.jpg

The engine was pulled and sent to BES for the works. An 88mm Turbo was ordered from Precision and a powerglide from TCI Auto. We decided to make it NMRA Drag Radial legal in case he decides to go that route with the car. In addition to the engine, BES handcrafted us an beautiful sheet metal intake.

lol Go ask Gary Rowe about Alum DP's. They fold up under high temp & pressure. He's had personal experences with that on a customers car (twin 88mm Stang). May work with proper brackets added to the DP to support it well off frame/tubing. Alum. seems to get weak under excessive heat. Thinker the better but more weight. Then again, there's always TI. :bigthumb

This is on 18-19 lbs. of boost with alot more to come. But before we push it anymore, we are going to take it to the track.

Numbers are 913/706

This is with a stock computer and is still drive by wire. Even using stock coil packs.

Don't forget that this is through a powerglide tranny and with slicks on it.

Not going to turn it up anymore just yet. It's built for the track, not the dyno. :)

Took it to the track today for some shakedown passes at 14 psi. All things considered it went pretty good. Never made a full pass but made a pretty good 1/8 mile hit for such low boost. 6.31@109 We had an electrical gremlin and the tach wasn't working. So it was short shifted 700 cause he had to use the stock tach and it's tough to see. Going to get all the little things that popped up on the first day out taken care of and will be turing it up after we get back from Atco. I'll post updates when it goes back to the track.

Main goal for the evening was to get Vinny his NHRA license. First pass we were expecting to see about 14-15 psi. As soon as it came up on the brake, I could tell it was really wound up. The car launched violently and made it about 100 feet and it sounded like he lifted. Met him down at the end of the tranck and it blew the pipe going to the throttle body off and bent it bad. Checked the logs and the boost controller failed so the gate was stuck closed and it probably hit way over 20lbs for a few seconds. I thought we were done at that point but we got the pipe bent back and decided to make some passes on just the spring in the gate which is about 10 psi. Make a couple of half passes which is how you have to do it for your license and the car was a handful. The track is not the best and we have some other work to do on the suspension. We were able to rig up the wastegate and get it at a fixed 15 psi. We were down to our last two passes and pressed for time. Vinny launched the car and had to lift 3 times and still mananged a 9.54@141. I was shocked considered he had to lift 3 times and we were only at 15 psi. 60' on that pass was a 1.37 which is pretty good considering the track. We didn't have much time and had to make one more hit. Left it pretty much the same setup but tried the other lane. Still had to pedal it but not as bad and managed a 9.42@148! I couldn't believe it. And this run only had a 1.46 60'. And also with no boost controller.

Here are the incrementals

1.46
4.00
6.11@117
7.90
9.42@148

On a clean hit with a good 60' on a good track I would say that is a low 9 at only 15psi! I can't wait to turn it up on a good track! Car will be at the NMRA Columbus race so hopefully we can turn it up there.

Here is a video of the pass

Modular Muscle, lol.

Shawn,

Not sure if it would qualify for KOS. While this thing could be a 'street car' it really isn't right now. Really all it needs probably is an altenator to make it on the street though.

Either way, Justin holds the 3v/stock electronics record and we are going for that. We are almost there and haven't even turned it up yet so this should be the quickest 3v every very soon.

I wonder what the all time Ford stock electronics record is.

Ken

Im not sure about the all time record. I would consider taking it to KOS. That would be a huge victory for Modular Depot and the winner gets a full article about the car. People will notice and hopefully you will be the top Mustang tuner. People start to notice when something of this scale gets alot of publicity. Along with breaking records of course.

Took Vinny's 88mm turbo car back to the track today. Our track is total shit, so it was a challenge to say the least. Also, we were testing 1/4 mile but it was an 1/8 mile race so prep beyond the 1/8 didn't happen. DA was 3200 feet. Most promising thing today was we went 5.81@119 pedaling it at 5.36 into the run. Got loose around 1000' and had to lift. Went 9.50@115. That was on 17 psi. Hard to really guess what that pass would have been without the issues, but I'd say an easy 8.

We are continuing to have issues with our boost controller. Made one pass only 13 psi by mistake and went 9.62@142. I believe this is the only full pass on the car. That means no lifting.

On the last pass of the night decided to try it at 19psi. Didn't like that at all. Really twisted the car up, we're going to have to make some adjustments to the chassis before it will handle that much power off the hit. Once it can handle it, a full pass on 19 psi is going to be sick, let alone 25+

Definitely learned alot on it today. We are going to swap out the MSD boost controller for the AMS-1000. I think we should be in good shape to run a 8 at NMRA Columbus.

Got it all on video and will upload some today or tomorrow.
