Now, I'm all for sting operations to catch people actually perpatrating this type of crime. As a guy that's been in IT (hacking, network engineer, security and forensics consulting) for 20 years... I can tell you there are more wholes in this crap than you could possibily immagine. It would be easy as hell to set people up even.

Just crazy!

That is going just a bit too far. If you KNOWINGLY have child porn on your puter or do download a file the you suspect contains it. your busted.

I've downloaded files and it end up being "illegal"......first step is save crital OS files and wipe the drive.

I like the sting operations where after IM conversation they try to meet up with the underage person, only to be met by the cops.

Just so you know, unless it's done forensicly, "wiping" the drive doesn't get rid of the data. I have several tools that can be used (the cops typically use ENCASE) to recover data even if you've formatted and reinstalled everything. In order for data to truly be erased, that section of the platter must actually have data written over the top. Even then, there is something called "slack" which is the extra space at the end of a block that might not get filled.

As to the "To Catch a Predator" shows. Like I said before, I like sting operations that catch people actually engaged in things like this. However, I have a problem with TV turning it into entertainment. I have a problem with non-law enforcement getting involved in the investigation for the sake of profit. And I have a problem with there not ever being a 14 year old girl that was a victim. Several judges have ruled that it's not illegal to talk to a guy who is pretending to be a 14 year old girl.

Previously to this show, most of the stings involved situations where, for instance, a parent calls the police because their son or daughter have been engaged in inappropriate conversation with older people. The investigators will then take over that account and persue. Thus, there IS ACTUALLY A VICTIM.

I'm all for protecting children of course. I just think that people become so emotionally involved because of the subject that they justify methods of investigation and prosecution they otherwise wouldn't. The rules of electronic evindence are tough. In the case of other illegal activities such as hacking or computer fraud, the slack rules they use for sexual type content would just never fly. Hell, I've seen hacking cases dismissed because the prosecution couldn't prove the defendant was actually the person sitting at the computer at that specific time.

plus it would be easy to post a fake URL link and most wouldn't stop to see what the link was, how phishing gets so many people via email.

an example (it is VERY SAFE to try!)

http://www.hardcore50.com (http://www.google.com)

Someone could post up a pic link "here's my new Fox Body I bought of such-such member" and I'd bet 1/2 or more would click on it.

yea but if there willing to first of all talk to some over the computer (a actual child or not) and know/think that person is underage then they need to be procecuted and thats the bottum line. even if its a ground man prtending to be a little girl that person is willingly, to there knowledge, to talk to a child inappropriately. but I do agree that they should not turn it into entertainment but on the other hand they desirve to be imbarest and humiliated.

Oh see, I think they DO deserve to be embarrassed and humiliated publicly, but not prosecuted. If there's no 14 year old girl, then there is no victim. Disgusting yes, criminal no. It's like busting someone for smoking oregano because they thought they were smoking weed. These guys are the easy pickins anyway, probably because they can't get the people who are the real problem. Find the guys that are posting the child porn; find the guys that are talking to the REAL 14 year old girls. This is just gastapo bullshit for the headlines.

I think the only reason they get the conviction rates they do is because these guys plea guilty. I'd like to see the results of any of the cases that have actually gone to trial.

what you aren't getting is these are the guys who are talking to REAL 14 year old girls. dont tell me you believe that this is their first time. and had it not been the perverted justice people, dont tell me you think they wouldn't have gone over there and had sex with a minor.
