302 vs. 351

I have a 1979 mustang cobra. It already does not have original motor or trans. otherwise I would not be posting this. As soon as I can save up some money I am going to restore my car and want to build a motor for it. My goal is to build a motor with around 500hp w/o the use of a turbo charger or super charger (possibly like to add later). My problem is that I'm not sure if I can get that kind of power out of a 302, or if I were to build a 351 I'm not sure if it would fit in between the shock towers. If anybody has some information on these motors, please give me some advice on whether I should build my 302, and if I can get the horsepower I want, or if a 351 would be better, and if it wouldn't fit, how would I go about moving the shock towers? I appreciate any information you can give me.

Build a 351W. More power and yes it will fit with some minor parts such as swap headers and a cowl hood and other misc stuff like pan etc...

A mild 351 based stroker motor should make an Easy 500-600hp at the flywheel. Mild roller cam decent heads and intake. A 351 fits a fox body easy. If I was starting from scratch it would be as big as I could afford. Either a 351 based stroker or a 500+ Cid Big Block.
