So I stared hearing an exhaust leak wtf. I looked into it a little more and found some exhasust studs were broken. I ordered some Ebay $150 headers to put on. They should be here monday. I started taking the exhaust manifolds off. What a compleate pain in the ass this job is going to be. I got the pass side manifold off. 5 studs came out 5 of them are broken. 2 of them I am going to have to drill and use an Easy out. 3 I am going to weld a nut to them and hope they back out. YEA Ford modular v10 engine. :flipoff: :smokin:

That sucks man. I did a set of headers on a 5.4 once,it's like the bolts were made out of rust to begin with!

Sounds like one hell of a good time!! Does ARP or anyone else make a replacement bolt, sounds like it may be a good investment.

First try with one easy out I broke it. Got 2 out by welding nuts to the studs. Got one out by welding the stud up a little so I could get vise grips on it. Back to the garage.

Pass side studs are out. To hell with drilling and easy outs. I just keep building up the stud with the Mig then I welded a nut on it. After doing it that way a couple times I could lightly tap a wrench around and back out the stud.

The Ford OEM studs are cheap, they are that way on all mod motors. There Are several alternitives to be found, one is the high quality metric studs we sell. Stage 8 and several other header threaded fateners makers mainly sell locking header bolts, which are really the way to go, when room and patiance dictates. I woudl not even think of tring to install a stage 8 locking header bolt kit while lying on my back ynder a stock type car.

Oh great, I am so not looking forward to doing this on my truck. Passenger side is already starting to leak. Obviously the weld doesn't stick to the aluminum head, so you can weld a nut to what's left of the stud? What kind of headers did you buy? I have a 5.4 though.

I got them from Ebay. I was just going to check the stock manifolds and put new bolts and gaskets on them but at $150 for a set of stainless headers with gaskets I figured what the hell. I got them in the mail yesterday they dont look bad and I have heard of others on the internet running them so I figured WTF.

Oh and your 3 valve spark plugs suck too. They break off in the head where the old mod motors spit them out

Well I am knee deep in this project now. Only removed the passenger side for now. 5 studs out... 3 broken off. Guess I am going to try and weld nuts to the studs. Tried heating them some with MAPP gas and vise-grip them out but the studs just round off.

If the stud is out far enough to weld a nut to they should be easy. Weld a nut to it let it cool a little then take a small wrench and a small hammer and tap the wrench lightly around. It the nut breaks off cuss at it and start over.

If that doesn't work, drink a beer between the cussing and starting over.:cool1:

Already cussed it several times.....haven't tried drinking yet. The nuts welded on helps.......helps snap off more stud.

Try put the nut on the stud then laying a decent amount of heat to the center of the nut/stud with the welder. Mine were Cherry Red Then let the whole deal cool and tap lightly with a wrench and small hammer. I was able to weld the stud up from allmost nothing and weld a nut to it. Make sure the stud and the nut are cleaned up with some sand paper or a little grinder before you weld it. I am telling you this job will make a man of you yet

Man that def' sucks.I had to take the manifolds off my truck while im doing my rebuild.I hammered a socket onto them and used a 1/2" ratchet to break them loose. All of them came out, thank god.Did ford go the cheap route with the new mod motors?

Don't forget the oil leaks on the pass. side head of the older mod motors. Did more of those than I want to remember... Seems about right older motors ejected #4 spark plugs and the newer models you can barely get out if you want to... At least they stopped shooting out on their own. Cheers to my escape from the automotive industry.

ALL THE STUDS ARE OUT!!!!!! Gotta get them orange when ya weld them then tap them slowly with an impact.
