My brother was heading to a pro national moto x race up in buchanan MI sunday morning to meet me up there to hang with some of my old racing buddies from out of town etc...He left 4 am & figured he'd get there around 9 am...well didn't turn out so well...on 74 a few miles from 465 loop around indy he dozed off & woke up in the medium....heading straight for this 75' wide 25' deep concrete water way between the overpasses...went airborn & landed nose down slammed against the opposite side concrete wall. he was wearing a seatbelt & climbed out pretty much with no serious injuries... the engine came through the firewall & he mangled the steering wheel with his 10 & 2 oclock grip....it took a semi wrecker with boom crane to lift truck out ....pics don't show justice to how severe it was...

heres one for you....no air bags went off...wonder if ford would like to brag about that...we're not complaining since he is ok but....kinda weird...

thanks for watching over my bro vinny!

if you look at the last photo...he went airborne between the guard rail & the sugar creek sign behind the guy in the white shirt. his tranny blew a big chunk of the 1' wide concrete and we still don't understand how he was able to actually go airborne vs flipping end over end off that 2' high edge...we think if his truck sat at stock height not allowing the bumper to barely clear it...he may of been flipped there.???? the front left rim shattered into 4 pieces....the truck ended up leaning upside down nose down against the wall on the side that they lifted out from...

Wow! I am glad he is ok. It looks like the cab of the truck is still pretty straight which helped probably help save his life:angel:

Glad no one got hurt. Looks pretty bad. Really surprised the air bags didn't go off.

Glad everyone walked away from this one. Not a pretty site at all. I'll bet the air bags did not deploy since the frontal collision was not direct and more of an upward launch. I think I would tell your brother to not buy any lottery tickets, his good luck is used up!!

glad he's okay,

i've seen other wrecks, where people walked away pretty much unhurt and say something about an airbag not going off

these systems are pretty sophisticated in how they work

daves assestment is probably right on

ford has some of the highest safety ratings in the industry

it wasnt direct off the take off but it landed nose down "as in 6 o'clock straight down like an arrow falling out of the sky sticking into the ground" in the bottom of the water way....at first we thought...maybe the mud & water cushioned it a little...but then your looking at the bumper blown through the radiator into the block of the engine...and you think..."hmm..no airbag deploy"...

i agree...no ones complaining...just curious how it works when you see people's air bags blow hitting into a parked car in a lot at 15mph:bigthumb

First off glad he's OK, but like other have said air bag systems are very safe and proven. Its all based on inertia and angle off impact. It takes two sensors triggered at the same time to set them off, a front one and one in the cabin. The flipping probably is why they didnt deploy.

I would have shit purple twinkies if I had woke up just before that happened!!

everything depends on agle and deceleration and if the system was operational at the time of impact. If there is an Airbag light flashing on the dash, it will not be operational. Depending on the year the sensors may have been over there service life. Airbag systems do require maintenence, although nobody ever does it, mainly because they never tell you that it needs done. We have fixed lots of cars that the airbags have not deployed when it was clearly hit hard in the front. and others, like a corrolla in here now that needs a fender and bumper, and 1600$ worth of airbags and sensors and airbag module! Weird angle hits tend to not pop the bags. Glad to hear no-one got hurt looks like a scary wreck!!
