Here is an update of whats been happening at PAE this year.
Paul's Automotive Engineering wins 3rd consecutive National Auto Sport Association National Championship, '06-'07, Jason Andrew, American Iron, and '08 Paul Faessler, American Iron Extreme. This years races were again held at the world famous Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, in Lexington Ohio, September 10-14.
After last years 3rd place finish at the Nationals, I new that my pump gas engine would not be enough, even though I had one of the best handling cars in the group, so I got busy developing a new engine combination( that has been unproven until now), for my 65 AIX Mustang.
We got things finished, and ran our first race in July, the car ran strong until the trans exploded. I upgraded it, and ran again in August. The car was fast and reliable. I was starting to get pumped up for the Nationals.
We pulled into Mid Ohio wondering what my competitors were going to bring to the party, but also confident that we were going to be the car to beat. On Thursday morning practice, I ran a lap of 1:28.3 seconds, which was 2.5 seconds faster than any competitor that day, and 1.3 seconds faster than any AIX car has ever run at Mid Ohio. After that lap I parked the car and watched my competitors scramble.
On Friday I watched it rain all day, and never started the engine. Saturdays qualifying race was interesting as I got hit and spun, damaging my qtr pnl and one wheel, but I was able to get going, and still ran fast lap of the race.
Sunday's Championship Race found me gridded 3rd behind the 2 previous Champions. After getting punted the day before I decided to take it easy at the start, and followed for 4 laps, then passed them both on one lap, and pulled to about a 6 second lead, and comfortably maintained that until a caution forced us to finish under yellow.
As this was only my 3rd weekend in the car since August '07, I was very pleased how quickly the car and I came up to speed. My new engine combination ran flawlessly, and the best part is that we have only scratched the surface of the cars potential.
