all day tracing problems with then 86! one thing after another. no water temp gauge. put in new one. battery bad, dead cell. starter solenoid.. now alternator! what the hell gives! :mad: to late to go buy a new one! parts stores dont open till 9! its going to be so damn close!

Swap the alternator for a 3g with lifetime warrenty.I have pics of the swap for 86 cars,you have to move pins in the pigtail.Or swap for a newer one.

Trace the wire from temp gauge back on to the intake.Mine rubbed the valve cover and shorted to ground and gauge took a dump.My 86 did the exact same things.Dont worry,it will get better.

we got it all sorted out.. but its got a bad ground we will have to trace. when its hot. it smokes and doent want to crank.

Does it smoke inside the car under the dash by your right calf?
Its most likely the pink w/white tracer wire in the loom behind the stereo.Mine smoked itself there too.

Replace the neg going to the block.My truck did that when i pinched the neg going to the block.
