View Full Version : So I think I broke my Lincoln's transmission this morning...

As most of you know, I just bought a new daily a couple weeks ago, and have been driving it everyday to work for the past.
It has been a great car, and in fact if it wasnt for a miss under hard accelleration it would be a freakin all out rocket!
It uses/leaks a little oil and trans fluid, but not much...
Anyway, This morning, I pull out up to the highway... and it is hard to see what cars are in what lane coming at you when turning left, So I pull out, and far back there is a car coming, so I step into it, and the car takes off..
The car gets to 6K RPM in first gear and then goes VVWWWINNGGGG!!!! BUCK!!! Then it seems like the trans was free-wheeling... and I heard VVWWWINNGGG, VVVWWWIIINGGG!!! as I tried to pedal it and find a gear...
So I let off, the car is ON MY ASS obviously, and finally it grabbed 4th gear and bogged...
So I come to a stoplight... and I take off. Keep in mind I am a little scared and driving it easy, well, The car revs to 4K driving it easy, then shifts, and sorta delays before it goes into gear, and shifts sorta hard doing it. So now it takes forever to get outta first gear. Sorta like driving a stick and holding it in the gear you want to be in.
So...
I think my 1 to 2 shift accumulator springs are broke! and I hope that is all that is bad!

Time for that 5 speed swap!!! Now is as good a time as any. The trans has to come out anyway. Sorry to hear though. Push your Dad's car out and work on it in the garage. LOL

Take a look at the 1-2 accumulator it's not hard to replace at all. The kit when i bought mine was around 40. Most of the time the spring inside is very weak and tends to break easly. Also after you drop the trans pan drain out the torque converter and replace the fluid with Mercron 5. It helps the tranny shift better. I've done it to all of my Marks and they all shifted better. You also might wanna check the 2-3 valve also

No 5-speed swap for me. I bought this car because I was tired of driving a stickshift everyday and my knee couldn't handle 275 and 71S traffic every morning and night. And this car was cheap. I knew the trans issue was bound to happen one day, I just didnt think sooo soon.

You pitched that roller clutch I warned you about. That is why I was afraid to mod the valvebody it just puts more strain on it. It is making the shift to 2nd but the intermediate one-way isn't holding so it effectively does nothing in 2nd. The shrapnel will go through the transmission quickly. overdrive holds the drum that connects to that roller clutch so it should be the next to go. It could be the accumulator spring, but I would count on it being the roller. Did you buy that other trans to convert and swap in yet? You better!

i think its same trans as yours... but in honesty i dont know shit about the mark 8... hell that aod in mine... only matches with lincoln aod's and rumored e150... because of a longer tailshaft...

94 trans...ew. 98up if you want to keep it together. In the 4r70w's only the police had the longer tailshaft. Unlike the aod's that were long tail in trucks and vans as well. There were actually 3 aod lengths, but one of them is really rare.

I might try to see if I can get a true mustang transmission so it's simpler to swap, Alan
Stricker's has them for like $230 w/ 68K........ should I?
Stangman

Okay, not strickers... Besslers... my bad

Jesse, you need to imitate that in real life next time I see you- the sounds it made...
But that sucks dude. Hopefully you get it straightened out. I know how much you love your Lincoln.

Any trans you get is going to require changes. The other one is just fine, but a mustang one will come with the proper converter.

It will be done today all I have to do is put the bumper back on and change those rear brackets. I have a trunk full of junk parts for you. I had to sneak a peak at your spare to see which one it is. You have the same one that I used for my race skinnies. Black painted aluminum 16's. Some 93's had the highly desireable 15's that were polished. Getting tires for the 16's is complicated.

I removed the temp spare tire and replaced it with a continental tire that is DOT rated. I run them as fast as I want to go.
I just got some new stickers in.

White stickers seem to show up the best. Transmission is done. I fought that subframe bolt for about 2 hours. Heated the plate and got the threads loose but the bolt won't come out of the bushing. I'm thinking spray it down with pbblaster over and over for a couple weeks and maybe the bushing will soften up enough to get it out.
happy new year everyone

Thanks Alan!
I could not believe how much differently that thing shifted on the way home!! A complete 180 turnaround from that old junk trans that was in it. I love the JMOD trick too.
Once I am done babying it, is it okay to do 1-2-3 manual shifting?

You don't want to manual shift these transmissions. The auto shift works better.
