I want some input on trans selection.

I had plans to put a T-56 in the coupe, mainly for cool factor/cruising....but after talking to some friends it seems the 6 speed isn't the best for drag racing. I will drive this car a lot on the street, but I wanna be able to bang gears at the strip also. So lets hear some more options.......

Only rule is it must be affordable ($2000 or cheaper) and streetable (no inline shifters)

Joe, I'm in the same boat. I really would like the 6 speed but they are costly. Have you considered at TKO? I've heard good things about them but dont have any personal experience with them. Hell I may just put the toloader back in for now. Keep us posted.

Quicktime makes a sweet bellhousing for the 4.6L. It lets you run a T-5, TKO, or a 3550. Runs about 400 bux.

It seems to be hard to find them used (TKO's/3550's). New their right at the upper end of my budget though.:(

T-56's are from $800-$1400 (used) for non viper spec units. But then you need a $200 cross member, $400 custom driveshaft, $250 Shifter, etc...but they are cool!

Still up in the air here.................

I heard somewhere that the Tremec's and toploaders use the same bolt patten on the bellhousing, is this true? I seen a bunch of 3550's and 3650's for sale at the C-bus swap meet for what I though was cheap but didnt know if they were any good or how strong they are.

3650's are broken daily behind modded 4 valves. That's why I sold mine.

I've seen a 3550 go low 10's on spray for 2 seasons. They seem to hold up.

Dont know much about toploaders, I think brads (atbracin) father-in-law who runs the Chuckwagon has had one behind his motor before.

Yup the 3650 is no better than a T45. The only reason to do a 6spd is the extra over-drive. Unless you are doing a viper-spec unit then the OD is no better than that in a 5 spd. What about a g-force t5?

I ran a tko 500 for a while...they are strong but low 10's with syro's gets tough. Depending on how fast you are planning on going I would look at a g-force or astro A5. I would stay away from any used tko's unless you know for sure they have the revised shifting lugs.

What about a g-force t5?

I like the G-force unit, little expensive....like more than the motor cost.....but I do like it.

Joe, stick with the T-56. Just keep an eye out on corral for the swap parts. I picked up the really nice HPM cross member for $70 shipped, and a Steeda Tri Ax for $40, but it didn't come with a handle. The trans is definitely much heavier than most of the 5 speeds so it does soak up a little more power. But the gear options out there for the trans are what make it better than any 5 speed IMO. Plus, even stock ones with just a 26 spline upgrade are taking major beatings behind high hp 03/04 cobra's. Plus the cool factor :) :bigthumb

I know Kenny, fordfan, on here has one in his fox. maybe shoot him a pm and get his opinion since he actually is running one.

My goal is to find a broken one for really cheap, and swap the gears out to my liking.

Hey Joe, if you want we can pull my cross member out and see if you can get someone to make it locally to try and get the cost down. You can have your drive shaft shortened not sure if that will save much money on that though.

I like mine the overdrive really isn`t what you would think it would be I run about 2300-2400 rpm at about 70mph with 3:73`s. Let me know if you want to check it out.

I found a '03 drive shaft for $140 shipped, And I already have a shifter for the T-56. Thanks Kenny, but I dont mind spending $200 on a cross member so dont go through the trouble. It would probably be just as expensive to have someone make it plus the time involved. 2300RPM isnt much for the 2 valve to be turning, So I guess I'll just do the six speed, I have to find one with a clutch fork and hopefully a clutch.:(

I was talking to Brad Carroll from Liberty's Gears at the PRI show about face plating the T-56. He said it was kinda pricey... But wouldn't it be cool as all hell!? :D

A cross member should be pretty simple to fab up. Grab some scrap stock from Rob, and an hour with the MIG welder you'll be set. ;)

mike, the toploader is the same bolt pattern but the front bearing where the input shaft goes in the bellhousing is dfferent. my father-in-law just put a toploader in his car and we had to machine a spacer for the hole in the bellhousing just like the mcloads.

Well, I bought a TKO 500. Sweet deal for Tranny, Spec 3 clutch, Pro 5.0 shifter, and 31 spline yoke. Now I need to buy ANOTHER stock crossmember, just like the one I sold...and ANOTHER FFRP drive shaft...just like the one I sold....plus a clutch fork and I'll be in business:(

Yeah I think so...Plus the Quik time bell housing lets you run a TKO, T-5, or a 3550...so I can steal Maggy's tranny If I need too:tongue2:

the G-Force T5 will blow your 2 grand budget. Then add on a new clutch for the 26 spline, your Quicktime bellhousing that you want, since you don't already have a T5, you'll need a good shifter. While you're spending money on the G-force, might as well upgrade to their case, another $250 or so.
