On the way home from work today and got rearended.

Just going up I-75 almost towards the infamous Malfunction junction, traffic stopped in a hurry and the dude behind me couldn't stop.

This is the result of plowing into a Reese hitch that is attached to a 3/4 Dodge Ram.

Notice the rusty Reese Hitch under the bumper.

I used to have one locked in my truck all the time. The only bad thing to this is when you are walking around the back of your truck and forget it is there and bust the shit out of your knee or leg.

Cars and trucks are somewhat built to be crashed in the front. My Ram lightly tapped a durango with a factory tow package on 75. My truck lost the front bumper and cracked the grill and looked hideous. Actually I still drive it around and it hasn't been repaired so i guess it wasn't as bad. An old school escort hit my ram in the rear and it destroyed the front end, broke the motor mounts and cracked the windshield, My truck just lost some rust off the rear bumper, the factory class IV hitch didn't even have a scuff.

Hopefully you and your truck are ok.Yea, came out VERY lucky. Thank God for seat belts! I do appreciate your concern.

My trucks bumper is a bit pushed in and it feels like the front end alignment got knocked out. That's about it. Not sure if I'll file a claim or not on it yet.

I'll tell ya what, there's not much worse helpless feeling sitting still, staring in the rear view mirror, KNOWING your about to get slammed from behind.

BTW, after I left the scene, I pulled off at a gas station to chill out and check out my truck. While I was sitting there, I saw one of those new tiny, little SMART cars drive by. I thought...., Man, NO WAY would I ever ride in one of those after I just went through!

Here's a pic of a SMART car below. I say SCREW MPG!

It would have been LIGHTS OUT if I was in one of these death traps!

Katmandu, your Dodge would have suffered worse damage in the same situation.

I know, a dodge punted my little Honda across the intersection, $3500 damage to it, $400 damage to my car, but I did spend the night in the hospital due to concussion.

Good to hear!

I'm with you on the SMART car! It's like a rolling casket...when you wreck it, they just bury you and the car as one.

He must of had the factory towing package on there. It has an oil cooler in the front and that front end isn't damaged enough to reach the oil pan.

Glad to hear your back and neck are okay Kat. Thats enough of a hit it could have pinched a nerve or given you whiplash.

Dad was driving a fullsize school bus and some lady ran her buick up under the back end... almost to the rear axle of the bus.

You know those giant tow hooks up under the rear? Dad had to drive the bus off the car. It ripped through the hood, wiring, and hoses like a velociraptor tearing through the fat guy at Jurassic Park.

It went from being slight damage to the grille and hood to being a total loss. All while the driver and multiple deputies stood to the side and watched. :bigthumb

My wife got rearended last year while sitting at a red light. An SUV (2 vehicles back) actually hit the SUV that hit her SUV. In her case, she did suffer severe whiplash and a pinched nerve. She needed several months of PT to get her neck right.

What a NIGHTMARE she went through with the Insurance Company! They claimed there was NOT enough damage to the rear of her SUV to sustain her injury. She's NOT the type person to take advantage of situation and it was a real PITA to get her bills paid. :dummy:

BTW, I talked to Allstate (the dude's insurance company) today. They already accepted complete LIABILITY for the accident. So far, they are being cooperative and responsible.

I did get (2) Estimates today....

One was for $1410 and the other $1693!

I have an appointment tomorrow at Allstate's drive-thru claim shop. See we'll see what they have to say.

Actually there's 2 bad things, the second is trying to get the thing out when you need to switch it. What I felt like ---> :dummy: I never keep one in there now. I leave a plastic hitch cover on it now.
