View Full Version : Guys with bikes: R1 or R6?

I have never rode bikes. Just a dirt bike here and there.

I thinking about buying a street bike. I was wondering if I should go all out and buy a R1 or settle for a R6.

I don't want to get a R6 and want a R1 in a few months or a year. At the same time I don't want to buy a R1 and kill myself.

I will respect it and not push it, at first anyway.

What are your thoughts.:confused:

Its ur choicee,but Big difference between a r6 and r1,The r6 deff. has enough balls and is a nice bike handling and acceleration but the r1 is jus nasty fast and woould leave the r6 at any chance it had,1992mustangDw will chime in on this when he signs in

after an 8 second street car, I don't think the R6 is gonna do it for you...

People say newbies don't belong on big bikes, but my friend bought a Hayabusa when he was still a new rider and he NEVER wrecked it. I'm sure you'd respect it enough to be safe.

I think on the streets the newer 600 bikes are fast enough and handle great. The problem I had with my last bike was I figured out after 10+ years of riding that I was not invinible. The trafic around Cincinnati has got worse year after year also. I loved riding but I feel more protected with a cage around me.

R1 all the way. The torque is amazing. I have rode both and the torque on the r1 at 3,000 is the same as the r6 when the r6 is at about 10,000 lol. If you just want top end speed then the r6 will still be plenty for you. I had my buddy's about 174 or so. No one belives me when I say this but my bike is calibrated and I have personally had it at 203, I think I have a video somewere. All in all the new r6's are plenty fast its no wheelie ripper but still will put your dick in the dirt.

the r1 i rode my brothers when he had his i would not sudgest it for a beginner bike its got unreal torque and speed

not really a fan of yamaha, but any new 600 is very capable of 10 sec. e.t's and a 1000 can go 9's stock with a pipe. I have ridden a lot of bikes, manly newer FI bikes and they are all fun.

I rode my cousins 600 f4 a few years ago, it was a nice bike, but it just couldn't compare to my R1 in the ass dept. I have a 02 R1, Rick93coupe has a 02 GSXR 1k, I'm guessing it makes 10/15 more hp than mine, it walks my R1 pretty good, both are still great bikes. The new Liter bikes would walk both of ours. You won't regret an R1.

My .02, for a beginner I would suggest the R6, it will have enough power and you won't be dissapointed at least until you become more advanced. You will love the R6 on the backroads but if you'll looking for something for more highway driving then the R1 is a better choice. The biggest mistake people make is that they get comfortable and become "cocky". I've been driving off and on for about 15 yrs. now and I still sometimes kick myself in the ass for something stupid I done.

Go with the R1. Do NOT even waste your time with the R6. As long as you have half a brain, you will be okay. Not totaly ripping on an R6, but if you can afford it, and have basic knowledge about how to ride a bike, why not get the better option?

600's get boring REALLY fast.

I would say go with the R1, OR go with a 750 of some sort. I've ridden a couple bikes, and by far my favorite was the R1 that I rode, although a lower hp carbureted model, it still was ridiculous, and had way more power than I needed, but it was comfortable, and I liked it so +1 for the R1

R1 for sure i have a 2003 with 10000 just got serviced at the dealer chrome frame and swingarm bike is black and silver $4600 and you can have it i dont ride it much anymore trying to get back into cars or would trade for a nice aroe!!

Anyone who says that a 600 is boring has never actually USED a modern 600 to it's full potential.

First of all, the new R1 is awesome. Personally, that's the bike that I would buy of the two. But that's because I love the idea of a road-going "big bang" motor.

A modern 600 is plenty fast, plus it's not such a monster that you can actually use most of it's power on the street. Either way, you're going to have a lot of fun.

Terry, you're a (somewhat) responsible guy. An R1 isn't going to be too much bike for you. However, don't think that you're going to be bored if you buy an R6. One of the most fun street bikes I've ever ridden is my 15 year old Ducati with 92hp at the wheel...it's set up properly with good suspension bits and the entire rev-range is usable power. Yeah, it has half the horsepower of an R1, but it's still a blast to ride.

I have been riding for 13 14 years and I have had a lot of bikes. I had a ninja zx 6r that I loved. I had an R1 and the power is stupid. Very rarley do you get the chance to wind it up like you can on a 600. That being said I am ruined, I dont think I can ever go back to a 600. and I was really happy with it till I got on th R1. I have a shadow 1100 spirit now and will be getting a second bike this year. I really liked my R1 but for looks and something different I am going to go with a 2003 to 2005 ninja zx 10. I would say get that R1 he is selling for 4300 ( on here) or get a nice 600 and have something to grow into. Why get into the highest price bike when the lower price bike will give you the rush you are looking for and when you get sick of it (if you do) you can always sell and get a whole new rush. Either way be careful and have fun.
One last thing. The on cycle liscense test can be hard on a big sport bike. My R1 was damn near impossible to do the u turn.

Take the Motocycle Safety Foundation class at the Oaks. You'll get to use their bikes to take the test.

i thought that was for there saftey class then you had to take the state test to get your L's

At the end of the class, you take a test on their bikes. If you pass, you get a waiver from taking the state maneuverability exam. You still have to take the written to get your temps prior to the class.

I think the oaks testing class thing uses something like 250cc rebels. Very different that sport bikes but are like riding a bike. AND you dont have to worry about damage from a drop.. lol

I love my05 ZX10R, its fits me better. On a 600 I feel cramped up uncomfortable and Im only 5'10. My old ZX9 I rode to Myrtle Beach and back rode like a cruiser. Very comfortable.

they have a bunch of different bikes there. 250 cc bikes down to 50cc moped type bikes

It really comes down to what style of riding you are going to be doing. I have a 2007 R6 and like to hit the turns. I got rid of a gsxr-750 and its a night and day difference. Was the 750 faster? Sure, in a straight line, but could outrun it on the backroads on the R6 bc of its better handling. As far as riding around town, there isn't much differnce between the two bike due to the lack of low end power the new R1's have. Once it's wound up is another story... Like i said earlier, really depends on the style riding you want to get into.

Took the maneuverabilty test on my 79 Honda CB750F.Weight on that bad boy was some thing like 550 pounds,very long,and not very agile,and with 280lb's of me on it. If you cant take that test on a rocket,I dont know what to tell ya. Oh,and if you show up on some thing smaller than some thing like a 500,they change the course to a smaller one.

even going to open track days say at mid ohio....i could smoke 90% of people who have r1's on a r6.....

insurance is cheaper & you can still hit 100 in a matter of seconds on the r6

For someone starting out you will have more fun with a r6 and be a better rider for it . A r1 has more hp but to 90% of the people that ride them it just a waste of power .the r6 is way smother on and off the gas coming in and out of the turns and will not have a tendince to step the back tire out so much and straight line power you will prob run the same time at the track with both . It takes many years of riding before you can hold a r1 wide open from start to finsh the finsh line :bigthumb and there both slower than your old car so it will be a let down after that j/k . ha ha P.S. Whats up with old dirty dozen guys selling there shit and buying bikes :dunno:

Picked up the R6 today, and just got home from putting the first 100 miles on it! It was a lot of fun.... and a lot to learn.;)

It will be plenty of bike for me for awhile!:eek:

After riding a CBR 600RR last night I can say its like night and day. You can flick the 600 around alot easier but the power difference was huge from my ZX10. It also felt like I was sitting over the fairing because of riding position. It would be a fun bike on a curvy road.

I think my buddy and I are going to hit HWY 10 this weekend, and he is going to show my how to ride!:coo1:

Not from me!

I learned today, it made me look at motorcycles from a different view. I will be way more cautions around them when I'm in a car. You never know how much experience someone has, and I know I was nervous as heck.

It does make a difference once your on the other end. Now you will have to give those guys a break on the tickets when you realize you cant help yourself :lol:

.Im up to ride anytime. I put over 6000 miles on mine last year. I dont get crazy, like Craig I flopped one hard and dont want to repeat anytime soon.


Kelly you need to take mine for a spin. Not sprockets needed to wheelie. half the time you arent event trying to.:eek:

Also you need flush mounts for the front. I thought you had highway pegs.lol
