me and a buddy are putting my engine together, or at least trying to. first off, i have an x303 cam, stock hydrualic roller lifters, stock length push rods, and pro form full roller rocker arms with 1.6 rocker ratio and gt40p heads with the valves cut 3 angle. without the lifters, pushrods, rocker arms on it if rotates perfect. then when you put everything on the engine at for different points it makes a clank noise and gets a little harder to rotate.

we checked and made sure the valve springs wernt bottoming out and they were fine. then we checked piston to valve clearance with play doh in the releifs, the valve didnt even touch the play doh on the exhaust valve and had plenty of room on the intake side.

does anyone have any clue what it could be?
any help would be great.

thanks, adam

Possibly valves too tight? I'd start with assembly of one cylinder(valve train) and then add another until the problem shows up. You should feel more resistance as you near complition of the valve train but Clanking noise has me concerned. Another question is are the plugs in it? take a look at em ta make sure they don't pretrude into the cylinder too far, thus hitting the piston. Not likely but worth a look. Keep us updated

yeah, it ended up being the inner coil on on cylinder. at that point i didnt have the peice of metal that ties the rocker arms together or a head gasket on so im hoping and holding my breath and im going to put it together and hope i have the clearance i need after that because those two together make around 80 thousandths. if it dosent work then ill have to buy new head gaskets, and the f cam. oh and the plugs were never in by the way but its making great compression but thanks for the concern both of you , adam

do you have stock valve springs and retainers or afermarket a just deal with same problem with a z-303 cam i used crane springs and stock retainers and they was bottoming out the center spring so i ordered crane retainers to match springs and works fine also had to use a longer pushrod used a 6.300

sorry, i havent updated this lol

the problem went away when i put the head gaskets on and the piece that connects the rocker arms together. the inner spring was just barely coil binding before and i have plenty of room now. :bigthumb thanks, adam
