Does it have a 4.0 in it?

Up till 2004 the explorer 4.0 and the 5spd auto had many problems.

Does it have a 4.0 in it?

Up till 2004 the explorer 4.0 and the 5spd auto had many problems. We used own a 98 Eddie Bauer Edition w/4.0 and 5spd auto. Very dependable truck. Zero problems with the tranny.

The only real issue was the cam chain tensioners getting REAL noisy. Most all early 4.0s had issues with them. Factory defect really. The one in the rear was a real PITA to replace.

The 02 Explorer we just got rid of, after it hit 130K we had nothing but problems with it. The 4x4, paint on the roof, the crack on the tail gate, ugh! Maybe it was just a bad year for the Explorer?

We had no problems out of the engine or transmission in our 2003. The rear end was another story though. It was repaired four times that last time included a new differential and all new bearings at 70K miles.

It's got the Sport nose, looks much better than the regular.
Nothing like a guy being excited about picking up a ride and people telling him what a heap he is buying...

I have an 02 Sport Trac and other than a hub bearing, it's been a great truck!

I've got an 04 Mercury Mountaineer that I just bought 2 months ago. But I got one with the 4.6 instead of the 4.0 as I wanted the extra hp and its basically the same engine as the Stang which should make it easier to work on.

Too early to tell but I love this thing! Drives great and the family love it too. Here's a picture of mine.

looks nice. My brother ion law just recked a 96 explorer with the 5.0 in it. They loved it and will be picking another up in a day or so. I sold cars for 11 or so years and the explorer was hit and miss. But it seems the ones who took care of theirs took care of them. Common sence. Enjoy your new ride.

There were two 4.0's. Was was an overhead valve the other was an overhead cam. The overhead cam is a good engine. The overhead valve is weak and does not last long...especialy if your towing.

Mine is sohc I think. Yeah, I appreciate the sentiments, but not cool to tell me the truck is a POS. Didn't expect that. Whatever, though.

I was being a smart ass. I'm on your side. I love our 02 Sport Trac. 2" lift and +2 on the tires. I use it to pull our 28' pontoon boat, and it does just fine!

Ah no worries, buddy. I was in a bad mood when I read the replies. No biggie. We have to get together. Maybe I'll drive that POS down, lol.

I wasn't trying to imply that either. More of an FYI of things to watch out for. Our course a lot of problems with ours could probably be traced back to Eastgate Ford which sucked to deal with. Did the the 2 doors get the IRS?

88ssp
04-20-2009, 09:53 PM
I didn't pay attention, but I don't think mine has the IRS. It is a holdover design from the 01, so probably not.

Then you probably won't see the problems we had with ours. The think design of the IRS contributed a a great deal to all the leaks. I really wish we hadn't had the problems we did because I like our Explorer a lot and I always liked the 2 doors.

you gonna post up some pics of YOURS? One of the most fun thing to do is getting a new car or getting one fixed you broke a week ago.
