my back 2 header tubes on the passenger side are getting to hot,i have replaced my head gaskets, heads, water pump, radiator, thermostat, and flushed the cooling system.I am still having the same problem, all the gaskets r on right and sealed good with no leaks.I'm running a stock fuel injection pump with a regulater thats bringing it dowm to a little over 6 psi of fuel to the carb.My fan is on a toggle switch that is on constant. This issue is causing my car to slowly overheat and is very annoying to boot.Somone please help.:mad:

when my header collector was glowing it ended up being a timing problem. Are you sure your distributor is put back in correctly according to the books? Does it idle high or anything like that?

no ,it idles at 9to 9.5, and we hit it with a timing light,so the timeing should be perfect.I have no cats on my exhaust either,so i no that it cant be that.

Your timing is too slow, advance it to about 13 or 14 degrees

just curious, but what does the timing have to do with the headers gettin hot.I'm not bein a smart ass,I just dont know what they have to do with eachother.LOL

When the timing is slow it allows unburned fuel to enter the exhaust causing the the fuel to burn in the headers and makes them glow red hot. The engine is not combusting efficiently when timing is slow.

Could be running lean... Leanout condition can make headers HOT...

my old '89 GT ran too rich... which actually made my headers cooler to the touch compared to normal.

May want to clean the injectors with some seafoam or something of that nature. and def. bump your timing to the 12-14 degree range. 12 is good if you dont wanna run 93 octane alllllll the time.

i have a 600 holly on it right now.Can i run sea foam in it? I'm going to bump up my fuel regulator up to 7.5 or 8 and bump up the timing and c what that does, thanx guys please send me some more i deas of what it could be,and i will keep in touch as to what worked and what doesnt.:bigthumb

There's a big difference between running rich and unburned fuel going thru the headers. When it is rich the fuel is in a gas (smokey) form and unburned fuel due to the timing being retarted is in a liquid form when it goes into the headers......

Do you have or can you borrow an A/F meter? Best way to diagnose it.Instead of just guessing.

A/f meter?

Air fuel ratio.

when my headers glowed I followed Troy's advice on advancing my distributor. Took care of my problem.

No you don't need an wideband to fix this. Give your self another couple degrees and the problem should go away.

I would recommend taking the car to Modular Depot, Cincy Speed, Dayton Performance, Pauls Automotive, or whatever your favorite shop is that can throw it up on the rollers and tune it on the dyno. This should not only take car of your hot header issue, but have the car running at peak performance. Money well spent!

I agree. I have had a wideband on a car before that read correct a/f ratio, but the car still had a timing issue that made the headers glow red hot. I had the timing too low.

The only thing i had to do is bump up the fuel regulater to a little over 7psi and i believe that did it,thank you everyone for your help.:bigthumb

ya mine started doing that when i installed new headers, bumped timing up to 14 and it stopped, i got it on 16 now
