View Full Version : Do you enjoy political threads?

Quite a few of the moderators are sick of seeing them, so I figured I'd make a poll to see who here really likes all of the political subject matter that's posted here.

I personally don't. The internet is a political toilet as it is....i come here for car related stuff. Still, there's a lot of other non car related crap going on too so i just don't click the threads...makes it really easy to avoid. It's not like we're running Obama vs. GM banners or something silly like that.

My problem with them is everybody is an expert and nobody is ever wrong. If you are so damn intelligent why don't you run for office and do something with it? You dig hard enough and you will find something that will support your point of view.

To many keyboard experts around here. Not just in the political threads either. I just read what interests me and let the other topics go.

I would suggest another forum but the whipping room seems to get all of it.lol

That's been discussed, but we don't want to encourage it either. We've been tolerating it, but the tolerance is wearing thin.

No easy answer but if the mods decide to do away with them I for one wont care.

Doesnt matter to me if they are on here or not, some are interesting others are not, if I want to read the thread then I do, if I dont then I go on to something else. Everyone has a point of view, as long as they are willing to hear other sides then political threads shouldnt be any different then any other threads... its when someone crosses the line, then any thread can be a problem, IMO

I usually read 'em, but don't post in them just cause it isn't worth it.... You will never change my mind and I won't change yours so it is just a pissing contest.

do away with them.....when i see "some" democrats & lberals on here that i would normally enjoy seeing at the track make unreal comments from outerspace...i feel i can't enjoy their company & be friends with them afterwards....

im sure those people feel the same away about us on the opposite sider etc..

I think anyone who wants to sensor what we talk about is a pansy. Go ahead and start cutting out anything that's political, why your at it, cut out anything that relates to guns or ammo then cut out anything that has to do with pets or sick family members. What a joke.

I voted no that I do not like them. I choose not to read them. If they were done in constructive critiscm or intelligent discussion I might feel differently. (Its obvious no one currently engaged in much of any of discussion is skilled with any real debate abilities).

Throw up a topic for discussion, debate the pros and cons and let folks make up their own minds. Who know, someone might even come up with a solution for one of the issues. BUT keep the personal attacks, name calling, etc. out of the discussion.

Think anyone is able to do that?

To clarify, like mentioned above, i don't care to read them and there's a very SIMPLE solution: DON'T CLICK THE DAMN LINK. :D

Really though is it that big of a deal? I guess if i were a moderator and i had to play ring leader and constantly monitor threads to decide when they're whipping room status, i would get sick of them too. The solution here is to just make a Political subforum and let people get out their political debate demons in there so that the rest of us don't even have to see the threads. This way the masterdebators can do their thing and the ones who don't like seeing them and can't resist clicking them will be happy too. If nothing else it'll make monitoring them that much easier since they'll all be in the same place.

You know. I agree with the above. If you don't like it then don't click it. We as a nation have become such a huge pussy. We feel the need to cut out anything that might offend one group or even one person. The american flag in the work office for example. If some doesn't like something then don't do it or read it. That doesn't mean someone else doesn't enjoy it.

Don't see anything wrong with the political topics. If you don't want them to clutter up a forum make a sub-forum for them. If all the site is for is cars then what about all the non-car topics? Where exactly do you stop?

I'm sure someone has already said something similar, but why on earth do you want to control what other people talk about? I never talk about sports, why don't you ban those threads? After all, it's not a sports site. I've never clicked a link on SBZ about football, basketball, baseball, etc.... so I know it can't be that difficult to avoid the political threads.

And honestly, if as a mod you don't wanna read those threads, maybe you shouldn't be a mod? I've moderated dozens of forums over the last 20 years and it's a job. You don't have to get emotionally wound up in the threads you mod. This is the way it's been done for years. Ultimately SBZ is a privately owned business. As such, the Holly can do whatever she wants with the site. However, any subject which keeps people coming back to the site and increases traffic is good for business.

If it were my job, and it's most definately not, I'd create a forum for political discussion. The "we don't want to encourage it either" idea is a mistake for business also. Encourage anything legal that keeps business going strong. Certainly if there were a specific place for political threads, they'd be easier to avoid for the people who don't enjoy them.

If the goal were to get a billion more members on here to make money off of, we'd create a politics forum, a porn forum, a boat forum, a gun forum, and everything else under the sun. That's not the intent of the site.

Vinny started this place as a Mustang site, and that's what it will always be. There will invariably be discussions of other topics on any board, but just because other topics exist, doesn't mean that this should be the place where heated discussions about them take place. Join a political forum for those.

I don't go to home-improvement forums and make several threads a week about the parts I'm going to put on my car. Why? Because that's not the intent of that web site.

I always thought "the intent of this site" was as a place for friends to come together, lend a hand, hang out, and meet new people regardless of what kind of cars they had. If it were solely a Mustang site, then a good portion of our "friends" (that own cars other than Mustangs) would probably have not had the chance to meet otherwise.:)

Hi
Interesting... What is this place??.... When Vinny and I were talking one time he called it a club, I told him I wasn't sure what it was. A car place sure but more than that a family place!!

I wonder what percentage the political stuff is compared to car related posts... maybe 1 or 2% ?? I went through the last 50 threads in General there were 3 political threads out of 50 including this one and 2 gun threads.

Maybe a list of allowable subjects would be appropriate? Let's see.... Are "I lost my job threads allowed"? How about "I need help moving" or My (insert) is sick/died" Nothing about cars in those.

Kind of a slippery slope if you want my opinion. Do what you think is best, but how would you do it!! Ban anyone that starts a political thread or just delete the thread. if you do this just let us know the rules..!!

I might read the first few posts in a thread and when things get out of hand I go else where. For most members they are easy enough to avoid reading. No one makes you click in on the thread and read the threads. Of course moderators do have a tougher time with this since they have the responsibility of ensuring that we are all playing well together.

Honestly, when the SBZ folks get together, how often is the conversation about Mustangs? In my experience, it's the common thing that brings the people here together for about the first 10 minutes. After that, it's just ONE of the things they have in common. Same thing on the site. We're people with a variety of interests. This site is a place to bring people together, thus it'll also bring those other interests together also. My bet is, if Mustangs were our only common interest, there would be no friends here at all. A car is just not enough to do that trick. So what it comes down to is that some people do not like some other people's interest and are now discussing banning that interest from being discussed. It's not my site or my job, so you guys will do what you want to. I just don't find it a very positive thing.

As far as political discussion being heated, well... I think all of us that get involved understand that's a basic premise of political discussion. Venom and I have been at it quite a few times, but I don't hate him over it. Hell, I'd probably even piss on the guy if he were on fire. (just kidding Venom) I still don't see the problem with, if you don't like the discussion... stay out of it. If you don't like being a mod, well... there ya go.

What's with people assuming we're going to ban political threads? (Or any threads for that matter?)

The whole point of this thread was that if the results were substantially "no", then maybe the people who post up all of the political stuff would realize a majority of the board didn't like them, and might post them less. And if there were tons of "yes" votes, I (and possibly other mods) would see that they're something that people actually enjoy discussing, and I'd lay off bitching about them so much.

Some of you guys just fly off the handle and assume us Nazis are going to squash your freedom of speech or something. Lay off the caffeine or something, jeez.
