View Full Version : Project 10.99 - revitalization
Well, I’ve never been one to document a build but I figure…what the hell. It could be fun! Here’s the run down…
1992 LX Hatch, former 4 banger/auto car.
Current combo:
357w, 10.8 to 1 CR
C.I. Hydraulic Roller cam
C.I. T.W heads, 170cc
Weiand Stealth dual plane intake
Holley 750 HP carb
T-5
4.10
Best pass so far was last fall…11.36 at 119mph.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLSziwEbLd0
My goal is to run a 10.99 with the current combo. I will be addressing the suspension and chassis, looking for all the e.t. I can find. Then come late fall...maybe throw a 200 shot on it and see what happens?
My hood flew up last year and caused some minor damage, so I’ve decided to make the car look “pretty”. I've enlisted the help of Mike Field. Actually I felt sorry for him and "let" him hang out with me...
Out came the engine, decided to paint the compartment while the cowl is getting repaired. The shock towers are a mess, the passenger side needed surgery...

Just think of the rust as part of your weight loss program.
Judging from your video, I'd say you could certainly benefit from more gear. Is that a 28x9" slick. If so, I'd try a 26x10 stiff wall and launch harder. Guarantee 1.4's at your power level. The guys at MD should have a couple lightly used set's laying around. We usually swap em out after a dozen passes or so. They should still work great on your car. Don't make me come out of retirement and show you how to drive that thing:tongue2:

Well the cowl has been repaired and is almost ready for paint. With any luck, the engine bay will be painted this week.

Thanks Rick and Rick. It is very close to running. Basically engine wise, I need a x or h pipe for shorties and a Lokar accelerator cable.
Chassis wise, I need some caster camber plates.
Other than that, just re-hang the crappy fenders and bumper cover. Once I get moved, we'll finish the body work/paint. I doubt it will make it out this year but next year it should be all pretty and stuff!

Jeff,
It's Dedpedal's old one. It has a 1 piece input shaft, some type of shift kit, and a very nice PI convertor. I'm not sure of the internals, without pulling it apart, but it should handle my 350 horse windsor for a while.:D I think a guy Timido used to work with originally built it?
All in good time, I'm just practicing on on Rich's:lol:
And be glad that he is...
Jeff88coupe
08-03-2009, 10:27 AM
Ah..that's my Old old AOD converter....think it was a 2800 nonlockup. It may stall a bit higher for you behind a windsor.
Here's a link to a guy selling some aod stuff....the t/b v/b would be nice for ya.

Bumping back up top to keep my body guy/painter motivated.:flipoff: Things are starting to move again. If all goes as planned, it should be painted mid to late April.
Picked up a tremec 3550 and going back the 5 speed route. Would like to start running UMTR somewhat consistently.
Still going try and get it into the 10s with a stock stroke windsor. Most of the body work is finished. Just need a hood and some assembly.

I pulled the factory wiring harness and gutted what I didn't need. Installed a Team Z k-member kit, manual rack, and Strange adjustable shocks. Got a hood, Boss Inc...good stuff. Well...a little progress. It's been a battle to get it to this point but we persevered! A HUGE "thanks" to Mike Field. We were scheduled to paint it Saturday and he sent me a text late Thursday night that said, "Dude, I'm at the hospital. I may have a broken ankle". Well, I'll spare you details of Mike thinking he is 18 again and deciding to play basketball but none the less...he had a broken ankle. He called me Friday morning and said, "We are still painting that car tomorrow". I told him he was crazy and the pain medication was obviously affecting his thought process. Well, as you can see...he got it done on one leg. We did have some help, another "Mike" showed up and helped MField out. Now the fun part of putting everything back together. It's been a job but with the AWESOME work of Mike Field and the support and help of Rixx93gt...I just may be out racing when the tracks open!
I love the base color look, reminds me of powdercoating....

Was hoping they would have an open comp class, that way I wouldn't have to make any changes. I'm about dead smack in the middle of 6.50 and 7.50. Not sure what I'm going to do.

Did you ever get your 351 to run right after we spoke in the parking lot of my work a while back?
Sorry if I missed that somewhere else

What kinda auto you using rich..
Probably an AOD. I've got a nice converter and a 1 piece input shaft. I'll probably spend the coin and get a nice manual VB with brake. I really want OD, getting this car back to being more of a street car.

You will not regret going to a turbo Rich, best combo I have ever ran! Lets faceplate that 3550 and convert it to a tko, you won't tire of that challenge!!:D

You should consider an early model winsor for the block strength. Once the combo is setup you'll want more power and that block will be the weak link. .02

I may have told him that a time or two. :D the long term plan is to get it working and then down the road a good block and maybe a stroker.

Yep, that's still my plan, to get it working on the early Windsor, then switch to an aluminum block.

Ultimately, I would like to upgrade to a Dart block and go 363ci with a big honking turbo. I've got sooooo much stuff to switch around, the explorer shortblock will help me get everything dialed in before I upgrade.
I figure if I keep it under 5800rpm and 10 to 12 lbs of boost, going through an auto...it should live for a while.

Why not just turbo the windsor you had?
Too much compression, close to 11 to 1

I know someone that could have fixed that for you.

I still have it....I'm interested in how you could lower the CR?

Thicker gasket and a set of heads with a bigger combustion chamber would help ya out

Give me the pistons, Ill dish them out on a lathe or pocket them on the cnc. Are they cast or forged?

Welcome to the world of turbo boost. :bigthumb Your car will now be relegated to being on jack-stands for better part of it's natural life. J/K
I think you'll really like going the turbo route. If you go with an auto, and you should, regardless of how much Chad tries to talk you out of it ;), make sure you get a quality converter. It'll be worth every penny you spend on it in the long run. Keep posting progress pics as you go.
Made a little progress...

Still trying to decide on an intake. Will probably go the Explorer route, nice and cheap and would probably make pretty good power up to 5600 or so.

Looks good Rich! What did you decide for shortblock?
That's a stock explorer shortblock from MFIELD's car. I still have my 357w. If it doesn't sell (i'm not going to keep lowering the price and give it away), Ill keep it and have Rick dish the pistons or buy new and eventually put it back in with a 76 or so.
The plan was to go the current route to get the bugs worked out...efi, electrical, fuel system, etc.

Might want to see if you can get a deal on a Systemax II intake. Great all-around intake. Problem is that then you'd want to start winging that thing 6000+ RPM all the time and that block might end up hating you for that.
