Neighbor kid was outside trying to jump his car last night. He's new to the area so I figured I'd stop by and say hello.

New purchase for him. 90(?) Mustang GT, vert. Car won't start. Won't even kick over the starter. He had good connections on the battery and a big truck giving it plenty of juice. It ran the morning before, but he said he noticed he didn't close the door fully and thought the dome light had stayed on all night.

Main thing I noticed when I went to turn the key, there was no resistance in the "Start" position. It goes all the way back and stays there. The "Accessory" position doesn't light anything up either. I expected the radio or fan to come on.

How hard are ignition switches to replace? Are they the same as the 80's T-bird (I have a manual for the T-bird)?

remove the plastic covers on column and see if the switch that is bolted to the column right in front of the key and tumbler has fallen apart that switch is held in by 2 t27 tamper proof torx screws and has a big plug with wires in the bottom of it or hanging off of it if it broke
see if that helps any

Thanks, I figured as much. I'll see if he has some time tomorrow.

Correct. You could run the Vin on your car at the dealer. Igntion switch was saftey recalled along time ago. They would come apart and catch fire.

He got it fixed today. Runs great.

Now he's looking for someone good to replace the convertible top. I've got a guy who does top of the line work, but he charges out the butt.
