I'm having a really difficult time finding good information on this topic and I can't really find any ranger forums that I like.

I've got a bad valve in the driver side head of my 94' 4.0 4x4 ranger. Instead of paying someone to pull the head off and spend all that money just to fix the one valve, I'm going to replace the engine/trans. The cost wouldn't be much more and with 160k on the clock, who knows what could happen.

So after a little bit of searching, it looks like the 5.0 drivetrain from an AWD Explorer/Mountaineer can be swapped into this truck.

1) What parts are needed for the swap?
2) What are the best years to find a drivetrain from?
3) What kind of wiring is involved?
4) Which transmission do I need to use?
5) Will all of the 4x4 setup that is currently on the truck stock work with this engine? Transfer case, etc?
6) What is the cost comparison to just dropping in a replacement 4.0 engine and trans?
7) Anything else I should know? Links to the swap?

Thanks for your help!

So I did find the James Duff website. http://www.jamesduff.com/broncoII/v8conversion.html

Answered a lot of questions I had and looks like it is going to be an additional $1100 for the swap parts, and then however much the engine harness and ECU from the E/M costs.

One question that didn't get answer though is about the wiring. Is the E/M harness a direct swap?

Will all of my factory gauges work?

How is the quality of the James Duff stuff?

I know what ever year harness and ecm we used for the Pinks car was easy to set up as a stand alone. Couple splices to the ECM relay for swithed and constant power and a splice from one of the TFI wires to the Starter side of the starter relay. I would find a set of motor and trans mounts and make up the rest. Or even better make your own mounts and let er eat.

Check out advanced adaptors also. http://www.advanceadapters.com/

Yep, I'm going to look at a 96' Explorer down at U Pull and Pay today. Hopefully it has the complete engine/trans/ECU/engine harness still on the car and in good shape. I'd love to have the discs off the rear end too....

What do you mean about find a set of motor and trans mounts? James Duff has the engine mounts for $199 and I think the trans mount is the same from the 4R70W behind the E/M motor as what I have now, or at least mounts the same.
