View Full Version : Sort of a project
I parked my GT back in 05 after a bad deal on some transmission work resulted in the overdrive burning out. I have driven it a couple times since then and it has a few other issues going on, an intermittent miss and part throttle stumble. Since then I have mulled around about what I want to do to the car, but now I am just sick of it sitting there. I'm going to start scrounging some change together to dig in and fix the little crap and get it back on the road. The transmission will come later when I have the funds.(or sooner if I can sell the seats I took out)
I'm making this a project thread to keep my motivation. Its not going to be anything big like pulling the motor or installing a turbo kit. But it will be a bunch of little projects, and hopefully an SN95 brake swap at some point. Its still a little ways away from being driven, but its getting there. Well, anyways on to the pictures.
I have been collecting parts for the past year or so as I got money saved up. Now I am just starting to get them installed.
I started a few weeks ago by removing the remnants of the Nitrous Kit I installed back in 2004, and replacing the intake tube, and putting a stock air box back on. I had my suspicions that the nozzle hole in the intake tube was part of the stumble problem.
I also swapped out the cracked fog light lens with a new one from craigslist.
Here is the car as it was back in 05 when I parked it:

The next step, the engine bay:
I'm going to clean up and refinish a set of valve covers I picked up a while back. Then I am going to clean up and polish or powder coat the upper intake, and then just do some general tidying up.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I agree buckeye, I loved the seats, but they just never looked right. That's why I went back to factory seats.

Nice car! I'll tell you what I did when my AOD went out. I purchased one off of craigslist for $75. It had been rebuilt a few years ago and the guy no longer needed it. I put it in and it worked perfect. Held up to several 1D1 shifts at the track and so forth. Sold the car a year later with it still working perfect...just and idea for you. I know I hated the high RPM's when stuck in 3rd. Also I ended up selling the busted one for a stangbanger price of $25 and the crossmember that was attached sold for $40 on ebay...so I was out a whole $10.
Soooo....in case I missed it. What are you doing with the Corbeau seats? (Are they solid black or black and blue?)

I've been scouring the classifieds for a cheap one to either get bench rebuilt and swap or to just throw it in there. The corbeaus are black and blue and they are for sale in the interior section of the classifieds on the boards.
I've heard good things about the PA valve bodies. I had a transgo kit put in the AOD that is in the car (part of what made the trans go out) and I loved it. It would hold the shifts out longer and bark em on both gear changes.

Hell, I have an AOD sitting in my garage collecting dust. If you need it... I'm not going to use it.
It came with my '89 Mustang GT 302 engine pull the guy didn't want to spend time unbolting the transmission. 88k miles.

I had the PA valve body and it kicked ass. Between that and a converter with a little more stall woke the car right up. BTW I think those Cobra wheels would look sweet powdered in the dk gray color. I know a powder guy if you need one.

those old seats look nice, but they didn't seem to match the porno red:lol: the car is looking good:bigthumb
Well, it’s been a year and a half and with all of the discussion regarding new members and making project threads, I thought I would update mine.
Unfortunately with everything that has gone on in the past year and a half, I have still not gotten the car ready for daily driving. Now that I am done with school, I hope to be able to at least install most of the parts that I have collected since I last updated
First, thanks go out to this site. I know a lot of people are complaining about the classifieds on here and new members turning this into Craigslist, but if it weren’t for the classifieds here, I would still be trying to find half of what I need. My budget for this project has been basically nothing. With a new baby and trying to get to debt free status, I can’t really justify dropping a bunch of money on the mustang right now. So, by selling off old parts that I no longer need, patience, trading and the generosity of some members on here (Thanks Ryan and ADaughen for the transmissions) I have almost all the parts I need short term and I was able to get some more work done.
Thanks to ADaughen and Ryan218, I have two AOD’s to try from once I pull the old transmission out.
My wife was nice enough to buy me a Dirty Dog converter for father’s day to put in when the “new” transmission goes in. It nothing too loose, but it should help wake it up more than the B&M 2000 stall that is in it now.
I wanted to get an external transmission cooler to keep the temps under control with the looser converter, and to tide me over until I can get a new radiator, but did not have the funds. I posted up some miscellaneous parts a while back. It turned out that Iceman needed some of the parts and we worked out a trade and I got a new transmission cooler for no cash out of pocket.
The next few things I scored amazing deals on via this site. Part of needing to get parts and having no money was selling parts I didn’t need. I needed money and I always wanted to go 5-lug, so I sold my 4-lug Cobra R’s and made the switch. I am sure some people have done it cheaper, but I am pretty happy with how cheap I pulled my swap off.
Yukon axles - $20 (Stangbangerz)
Damn near new Lincoln Rotors - $25 (Stangbangerz)
Ranger drums, turned - $35 (U-Pull Junk Yard and O’Reilley’s)
Paint for the drums - $ 4 (Lowe’s)
17” Tri-Bar’s - $80 (Bought 96GT wheels for that price and traded them to Skeptiq for the tri-bars)
For a total of $164 I did the swap with wheels.
Here are the most recent pics, after the wheel swap:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y115/SleepyGT/PICT0462.jpg
Note the new plates, the old ones expired in 2006. It is time to start driving this thing again
Now, the problem is I have always loved the 94-97 Cobra wheels. I happened to get a good deal on a set a few months ago so I jumped at the opportunity. However now that I have had the car out with the Tri-bars on it, they are really growing on me. So what do you guys think? Should I run Tri-bars or 95 Cobra wheels?
Next, I knew it was going to be a while before I can go power adder on this car, so when Metcalf posted a set of 4.10’s for sale for $50 a while back, I jumped on it to maybe get a bit more acceleration versus the 3.73’s that were in the car. Got those installed a few weeks before I pulled off the wheel swap.
During the gear swap:

I had an adjustable FPR for the car a few years ago that got “borrowed” and I never saw it again. I scored a good deal on here for a used one which I hope to get installed soon.
My car had a set of cheap plastic floor mats in it from the mid-nineties when my dad owned it. I wanted to get a set of black Ford Racing mats, but I am too cheap to drop $50 on a set right now. I also needed to get a 5-lug spare. When 99S281 posted up the 04 Cobra he was parting out, I picked up the floor mats and the spare/jack from him for about the price of a set of mats, killing two needs at one time. The driver’s side mat is a little worn, but I think it looks worlds better than the mats that were in there, and I will upgrade them when I get the funds.
The new mats to hold me over:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y115/SleepyGT/PICT0464.jpg
There are a few more parts I want to pick up (Sub-frame connectors, new head lights, and a contour fan) so I am hoping I can get those sorted out soon as funds are available (or trades happen).
That’s about all that I have gotten done since last update. I had planned on throwing an AOD in it once the weather cleared up. But I happened to score a great deal on a 4R70W out of a 99 v6 and I really want to throw that thing in. I don’t have the funds for the controller, so I will likely go with adapting OE parts to make it all work. I am torn right now because I could throw one of the spare AOD’s in during a weekend and reap the benefits of having OD back, and be able to test out the new converter, but I am hesitant to do so, because if I do, I know it will be a while before I get the 4R70W installed.
Well, that’s where this kind of project sits right now; waiting on funds and decisions to be made. I will update back here once I get things moving again.

You need to just change the interior color all together... Carpet isn't very much.

Cheeeeaaa! But seriously, the top dash is already black...just take off the vinyl pieces...paint them...and buy a $100 carpet. Bam! Now you can use those fancy seats :D While you're at it...throw a manual in that bitch!

Haha. I am partial to the red. And I sold the fancy seats already.
You might be on to something with the manual trans though. I've kicked the idea around several times, but it seems everyone wants an arm and a leg for them now.

That's a good looking GT you got there fella. I feel your pain with having a baby and trying to get the debt down to $0. You always gotta make sure your family comes first, even tho us Bangerz want to have our rides on the road! Take your time with it, you will enjoy it even more when you get the bugs worked out and can drive it like it was meant to be driven. Keep the updates comin fella!
damn, they sell conversion kits now? didnt know that. either way, 1295 is way beyond the project budget at the moment. ill have to stick with the slower, self shifting trans.

i have to say you got a nice looking gt. deff like the tribars on it i would stick with them. clean all the way around. i give ya a 10.
Thanks for the kind words guys! She's far from a ten, but I like her. If this weather keeps up, I should start taking care of some of the small stuff this week. I know I am itching to do so
It seems the favor is overwhelmingly toward the tri-bars. Looks like I might have some cobra wheels up for sale soon.
