wheel painting

i picked up a set of wheels and they are aluminum with clearcoat. the clearcoat has peeled off and i want to paint them silver anyways. do i just sand them down and primer then paint them? thanks

thanks for the info. i actually have base/coat clear coat thats going on the wheels. i just finished a set of 16' gt wheels for a friend and turned out great but they were different material.
