So I have a custom ground cam by Crower. Specs= Intake duration is 288, exhaust duration is 298. Intake life is .512, exhaust lift is .530. Lobe seperation is 112. So my question.... I'm running stock heads... I bout a explorer motor..and they have GT40 heads on em which I was going to put on my car... My buddy told me it will make the cam sound ALOT better with these heads. I'm wondering if this is true and why?

No, not true. That cam is way too high of lift for those heads in my opinion. also, advertised duration tells me nothing, you need the at .050 lift specs. that will tell you what's going on with it. The lsa is good for a street car and will make good power on spray too.

Mike... .512/.530 lift is to big for a set of gt40/gt40p's? Why? That's in the range of a F cam. The custom cam I ran back in '01 in my old stock 302 shortblock gt40p head combo was .513 lift....worked good for me.

well @ .050... Duration: Intake= 228, exhaust=234. Lobe life: Intake = 320 and exhaust= 331.
I'm still trying to learn what these numbers mean... i'm clueless when it comes to cams....

I think those heads would be great for that cam.

They are probly good heads, but that cam REALLY favors exhaust.I dont think those heads would keep up.

yes..the cam favors the exhaust to help the poor flowing stock sbf exhaust ports. I think it would work pretty good with a set of gt40 heads. Heck..you already have the cam..put it in.

Never said anything about stock heads.I was reffering to the GT heads.
You wont get the full potential of the cam with those heads, but it will flow.Stick it in and see how it does.Like Jeff said, might as well.

I think that is a good cam for your combo and also that is a great nitrous cam. And no, the heads won't make the cam sound better but the whole engine will sound better with the head upgrade.

do you have the explorer/gt40 intake ? I would change the intake when you put the heads on. I wish you would have them a few weeks ago , I could have put them on for you.

:agree: im right with you jeff, it actually sounds like a decent cam ... just run some 1.6 rockers with them, the cam has plenty of lift ... favoring the exhaust is what you want with those gt40's, they are the side that need the most help ... a nice little clean up with a dremmel would be nice, if the heads are already off ... lots of websites out there to walk you through it ...
those heads can take a .550 lift, they will flow that high ...
post you're duration numbers at .050, that would help me better ...
one more thing, you will needs some good valve springs running that much lift ... you can double check me, but those stockers are pretty bad ...

still have not done the head swap yet.... I really need to quick...seems like w/ these stock heads it will only get up to 5500 rpm and to me sounds like the valves are floating... is the because of the cam being so big on stock heads?????

Jeff, maybe I'm wrong, but from what I remember flowing GT40 heads and P heads on a bench, they stopped flowing at .480 lift. Yeah, this cam isn't much higher lift but it really fell off and started tumbling at .500 lift. I guess maybe it doesn't matter as much, but I was just trying to help the guy out with his question. You have more experience playing with those heads than I do.
