Some of you already know both my daughters are diabetic, for those that don't: Abreanna and Taryn were both diagnosed with Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes within 3 weeks of each other in the early months of 2006. They will be insulin-dependent for the rest of their lives. Since that time, they have already endured over 19,710 finger pricks and insulin injections. Even with this level of checks and balances, their life span has been shortened by at least 15 years. Within this shortened lifespan they face many complications including: heart disease and stroke, nerve damage, circulatory problems that could lead to limb amputation, eye disease, and kidney disease and failure. Diabetes may even prevent them from having children of their own one day. We dread the day we may have to explain to our children that we may out live them. That is a nightmare to any parent.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is the #1 non-profit funder of diabetes research worldwide. One of JDRF’s largest fundraising events is the “Walk to Cure Diabetes.” This is our fourth year participating since Abreanna and Taryn were diagnosed, and we have formed a team named “Shea Family” to raise money towards this cause. This year’s walk will be held on October 3rd @ 9:00 a.m. at the Dayton Island Metro Park.
