That's pretty impressive. I've always assumed the old cast iron cars would take the hit much better than a new car. The safety inside the cab is obviously well designed.

That's a great video. This should be used as a commercial.

WoW! i guess all that plactic in the new cars really does save lives... i would have expected the steel in the Bel-air to hold up alot better that what it did

Did you see the rust that blew out of that thing? I think it was more bondo than steel any more. :(

I figured the bel-air would have mowed it right over

I used to do these simulations much like this at my last job everyday. It is very impressive to see all the engineering that goes into todays saftey systems to make results like this possible.

Why is that? You couldnt possibly have thought that old cars were safer than new ones. Cars from that era were designed with absolutely no safety in mind. The Bel Air probably didnt even have a lap belt from the factory.

The problem with the older cars, as the video demonstrates, is that they transferred energy, as opposed to absorbing energy, much more than newer designs.

The steering column in the 59 was headed straight for the jugular.

You answered your own question when you quoted me. I didn't think the old car would buckle like it did, that's why I made reference to the old cars being cast iron. Yes I know they weren't really cast iron.
