The more I think about my wreck and why it happened the more I am placing the blame on all the street driving with the spool in the rear end.

What differentials are some of you guys using that make big power and still driving on the street?

I have 33 spline axles so i would like to be able to use them.

Any ideas/suggestions appreciated.

I use a detroit locker and 31 spline axles

Well shit! If you are yanking the wheels like that with a detroit locker and 31 spline axles i should be good then!

Before this year I was running a 31 spline trac-loc still putting on the bumper:lol: I seen your pass when it broke and it was shaking the tires bad!

I was watching from the fence during your pass when you wrecked. Your car was wheel shaking/hopping bad. That is super hard on axles/studs as you unforunatly found out. I've seen NMRA drag radial cars brake 35 spline axles from tire shake. A detroit locker will hold up to pretty much any thing you can throw at it..little noisy on the street though. My 31 spline 4 lug spool rearend has held up since '02. One thing I always do before each trip to the track is to make sure my rear rim lug nuts are torqued to 90 ft/lb.

I'm thinking of going with this diff and 31 spline axles and have my stock housing beefed up with welded axle tubes and 9" ends:

Thanks for the responses guys. Do you think it is worth switching out the spool? Do you drive your car much on the street Jeff?

Not so much in the last 2 years since I put the C4 in. But I drove it alot from '01 to 04 when I had a 5sp in the car. Usually drove it to the track to race then also since I didn't have a truck/trailer available. I didn't and still don't mind driving a spool on the street..especially with regular street radials. Only time it's noticable really to me is when you need to make a slow turn..like in a parking lot. I love it at the track...you know the car is going to go straight on the launch.

I drove mine on the street too for the last few years. I am just trying to figure out if that was the root of the accident...i drove around on slicks then radials for the longest time. the wheel studs were a couple years old but were the 1/2" studs

i have been looking at a air locker and a full built rearend

From watching that pass...I'd have to say it was caused by the severe wheel hop/tire shake you had going on on that pass. The rapid load/unload/load/unload forces of the tire grabbing then spining put tremendous stress loads on all the rearend/drive train parts. Now why did the wheel studs break instead of maybe braking an axle...don't know. Maybe you didn't have the lug nuts torqued high enough...hard to tell.

What causes the wheel hop/tire shake like that?

I'm in the same boat here as your Brandon, trying to decide on how I want to set this rear end up because I plan on driving my junk on the street just like you do.

Keep the 33 spline axles. Upgrade to Moroso 46140 studs and you should be fine.

If you want the Diff for street driving, this is the Diff I was telling you about.

If you need the housing welded up, we can handle that.
