what is the peak hp a stock converter is good for, im gonna try to go 350-400 or should i simply invest in a perf one. keep in mind this will be a DD.

To give you an idea of what you are looking at there is no magic number at which it will surely fail. The more power you put through it the faster it will happen. Even on a stock motor they have problems. Also there are 4 different generations of the small diameter converters. The early ones had round lugs and a weak lockup piston. Worthless IMO for anything, ford updated this in 96. In 02 they decided to furnace braze the fins which helps but in 04 they installed a bearing in place of the plastic stator cap. Thnose are the best of the bunch. They never did use any good frictions, you need me to do that.
