Buddy of mine is working on a 2000 Saleen S281 Supercharged stang and needs to refill the 8.8 with fluid. He said it's not like your typical 8.8 trak lok diff as it doesn't have any clutches, but has gears instead. It also doesn't have that big pin through the middle that you remove that 8mm bolt to get the axles out but just a big square tube instead.

What kind of diff is in these things and what fluid do they call for?

That wouldn't be a Detroit locker rear end would it? just curious. Heard a lot about the locker, but never actually saw the internal clockwork so to speak.

If it has worm gears that travel transversely thru the locker assy to provide engagement it is a probably a detroit locker or a detroit truetrac. If it has opposing clamshells with teeth it is probably a powertrax unit.

Since its a gear type unit he won't need any friction modifier as it is only for use in clutch style LSD's. He should check which type it is and contact summit or the manufacturer directly to verify that they don't require a different oil than what is specified by the diff tag. Those units run from $450-650$ new plus that much for install so a phone call is cheap insurance.

It doesn't have a stock diff in it then. This one doesn't have any clutches in it.
