I'm looking at picking up a project Honda 250R quad. The quad doesn't have a title but the seller says that the vin comes up clean. I've ridden quads before, but they were always my dads, so this is the first time I'll be buying one myself.

How does this work? I'd like to get the vin and check it myself, to make sure it's not stolen.

The guy said he has owned over 20 quads and had a title for only 3 or 4 of them. Just sounds a little odd to me?? I don't know, it may be normal.

The frame is an 89' btw.

Anything else I should check for? The seller is advertising that the frame is straight and crack free. It's mostly paint free so that will make it easier to look at and check out. Any known problem areas on the frames?

96 and newer do have titels

So since it's an 89, it wouldn't have a title anyway then?

I'm assuming the still have some kind of vin number on the frame though, where is this typically found?

Ok thanks man. I tried googling a bill of sale form for an ATV and everyone wants like $5 to download the form. Anyplace else I can get one?

I've had my fair share of dirtbikes and quads. Ohio didnt require titles until the beginning of 1999 for off road vehicles. I had a 98 YZ400f that didnt come with a title, but I had one made for it. Now the next year I bought a 99 YZ400f that came with one from the factory. So if it's 98 or newer, it wont have one from the factory, just a origin certificate if they would still happen to have it. Get the vin and call the sheriffs, or go to a dealer and have them run the vin. Either way your not at fault if it is stolen this way because you dont own it. Look on the frame near the engine mounting area, specifically the right side near the down tube for the vin. If it's not on the frame, then something is deff fishey!

I just bought Kent's 300ex, no title. The title is for insurance purposes as best I can tell.

I was told that in ohio you have to have a title to buy a state sticker so you can ride on state land. the lady told me ohio passed a law in july 1999 that requires all atv or atc's to get titles no matter what year they are.that doesnt mean you have to have a title unless you want the state sticker. my buddy has an 04 that he bought new that he didnt get a title because he purchased it for his farm so he only got a bill of sale

What would be an example of state land? Like Haspin?

No haspen doesn't care. I have had a lot of quads and usually didn't have a title. Some states allow you to ride them on the road as well and there are a few state parks that require a sticker and you need a title for the sticker. I have ridden for years and never had a problem. I have an 05 z400 now with a clean title. I never even put it in my name. i dont want to pay taxes on it so I kept it out of my name. Titles are hard to come by with quads for some reason. If you want to protest yourself pay for the bill of sale so you will have a paper trail incase it comes up stolen. How much are you spending? All haspen requires is a helmet.

Haspin requires a helmet and one of their Haspin cards lol. Yea state parks require titles for stickers a.k.a. ditch stickers...

ive had 50 or more new dirt bikes since the early 90's and until a couple years ago, you would simply get certificate of orgins "a little fancy title looking piece of paper". being off road use etc.. not putting a license plate on them, throw em in the drawer and never touch it again. certain off road parks around the country started issuing stickers etc..and i think you need the cert of orgin in your name which sometimes could require you to pay taxes / register etc..kind of turning it into a "title". quads started getting more strict @ 2000 being that you can license them in many states...as far as the dirt bikes, i sold dozens to people with a bill of sale written up and thats all they got

It's not much at the moment haha, I'm going to start stripping the frame as it's got several layers of paint on it and see what I'm working with.

There should be a vin tag riveted on the front of the frame..it will have the year of the quad and the vin.

Yep, it's on there and came out clean. It's not riveted though, it's actually a metal tab that is part of the frame.
