View Full Version : Beware - Your license renewal may be blocked

I went to renew my license yesterday as we all do in Ohio every 5 years. The lady runs the standard check and tells me that I have a block on my renewal from the state of Tennessee. I haven't had an altercation with this state since I lived there briefly in 1984.

I call them and I am told that they are blocking my renewal because I owe them a reinstatement fee for a suspended license in 1985. - 1985 !!!!!!

I explained to the lady that I was aware of a ticket I got in 1984, but that I had paid the fine. She said. "No sir, it's not a fine but a reinstatement fee." I said, "reinstatemnt for what?" She said, "Reinstatemnt for your suspended license." "That issue was resolved by my lawyer in 1984.", I told her. "Sorry sir, you have to take that up with Rutherford County.", she remarked. So I called Rutherford County Court and after waiting an hour for the lady (who was very nice BTW) to go through the paper archives, she called and told me that yes my license had been suspended and that I would need to send $140.00 to the State DMV to get the block lifted that has apparently not received.

In August, 1984 I was pulled over for a traffic infraction in West Harrison, IN by a local-yocal-hole-in-the-top-of-his-head-crook-of-a-cop named Gary Noel who was very well known for being a real PRICK! STILL IS IN MY BOOK!!!! Hope you read this NOEL!!! He ran my then held Tennessee DL and told me it was suspended which was the first I had ever heard of. I get a lawyer, go to court, and low-and-behold 6 weeks later get a letter of reinstatement from the Tennessee Safety Dept. along with an apology for not having properly notified me of this occurrence. I got my license issued in Indiana that day and I have been good to go ever since... Well that was until 12/22/2009 twenty five years later. So I paid the $140.00 since I have no longer the documentation to arbitrate with.

This whole ordeal is because of Federal and State Driver License Computer systems being tied together with no check and balance system. Tennessee just brought theirs on line a few months ago.

Now I ask you, if there are statute of limitation laws in this country for more severe offenses, then why should a person be held accountable to prove he/she paid a reinstatement fee via a lawyer and received a reinstatement letter in 1984 twenty five years after the fact. Most people me included purge records very 5-10 years. This is political BS at its finest. Just wait until they get hold of your helathcare records. We will all be SCREWED more than we already are.

They have to pick on people like me and you because we care. And yes Noel is a jerk. There is a huge population out there that doesn't care. Why pick on them. They have no money. This is where we are going

Chad, it is also every 4 years, for renewal.

Sucks though. I thought driving infractions dropped, after 3 or 4 years.

Oops, I thought it was 5, never mind 4. As far as infractions this stupid issue does not involve points or an unpaid ticket. My license is clear to renew in Ohio but only being held because Ohio is honoring this bloc kplaced on my renewel by Tennessee until the matter with them is resolved. There is a reinstatement fee apparently if one's license is suspended. This is what they claim was not paid. Yet my lawyer handled this and cleared up the issue in 1984. My guess is that since everything was in paper back then, the information never got fully transferred from county to state or vice versa when this all transpired, leaving an open loop. If I decided never to drive again I could go the rest of my life legally as normal. However because this is a reinstatement fee they are claiming I owe on, it is the same (only higher) than the fee you pay to renew your license each term. I wish I still had the documentation from the 1984 case that this matter revolves around. The lawyer who handled my case is long since retires and possibly dead by now so I wouldn't even know wher to go back to to get the receipts and documents showing that I had resolved this issue through him in 1984.

I can't even begin to imagine the revenue this is generating for states because apparently there is no minimum time they can go back to collect fees and/or fines.

Man that's some shit sorry to hear about that. My wife ran into a similar situation with RETA taxes from when she was 16. 10 years ago she sent them proof showing she payed it and they still said that we owe them. Sorry not the same thing but similar and very annoying!!! By the way I was only about 2 weeks old this time in 1985

Well Ohio boned me twice! I got 2 letters about 2 years apart telling me I had been suspended! For what you ask? Well, I had to call to ask the same exact question. I call Columbus DMV, and speak with a very prompt woman on the phone both times. After 20 minutes on hold each time, they came back with my file, and couldnt understand why it was suspended. They both went and got supervisors, and the supervisors informed me that it was a computer error on their behalf! What do I do to remedy this problem? They say come to c-bud BMV, pay them $40 pay them $40 both times, and they will re-instate me. So they boned me, then made me pay for their screw up twice! I hate government!

That's what I was afraid would happen as well. We all know that computers NEVER, EVER make errors nor the people who input the data or even the person who devloped the software the system runs on RIGHT? I called Columbus this AM and they told me the deal was now clear. Went to BMV and it was packed on Christmas Eve. So will do it next week. Have a good Christmas!

Glad you got it straightened out. Sucks to have to pay for it, though.

Yep, that 140.00 would have covered one of the four tires I was wanting to get for the car next spring. Was looking at putting NItto 555 Extreme 255-50-17 on the car all the way around. Adds and extra inch of rubber and will fit the stock rim without any problem. Same height as well, well 1/16" inch shirter. But NBD.
