How to test a amp

My son just got himself a new (used) amp...anyway before we go to all the trouble of running the required lines is there anyway to test it? Just hook up the ground and positive, then what do I have to hook up for a remote wire? Is it a hot lead? Some quick help would be great!!

you can just jump the remote wire over to the positive wire, to turn it on
